Smoothies

Smoothies can be an easy way to nourish your body with essential nutrients. The best way to know the exact ingredients in your smoothie is to make them yourself and what most people don’t know is that within 30 minutes of making a smoothie you lose 50% of the nutrient content, making most shop bought versions, nothing more than water and sugar.

All you need is a blender, a base, such as water or raw milk and then it’s up to you what fruits and vegetable variations you use.  By adding protein powders and nutritious powders such as marine phytoplankton, moringa leaf or chlorella you can create a powerful meal in minutes.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is still considered quite new in western countries but has been used extensively in countries, like India, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Philippines, which have a good production of coconut oil. At one time, coconut oil was also popular in western countries like the United States and Canada, but there was a strong propaganda campaign in the 1970s spread by the corn oil and soy oil industry against coconut oil. Coconut oil was considered harmful for the human body due to its high saturated fat content, which at 90% is one the highest.

But as research now confirms what a lot of experts have been saying for years, saturated fat is actually very beneficial to the body. Almost 50% of the fatty acids in coconut oil is Lauric Acid. Lauric acid can kill harmful pathogens like bacteria, viruses and fungi and has been shown to kill yeast infections such as Candida, so it’s great to cook with and added to dishes such as soup.

Coconut oil can also be very good for the hair and skin and can be used as a daily moisturiser for hair and skin. It has also been popularized in recent years by using it like a mouthwash in a process called oil pulling, which can kill the harmful bacteria in the mouth, improve dental health and reduce bad breath.

Bone Broth

Bone broth was a way our ancestors made use of every part of an animal.  Bones and marrow, skin and feet, tendons and ligaments that you can’t eat directly, can be us in a broth.  The slow cooking causes the bones and ligaments to release healing compounds like collagen, proline, glycine, and glutamine that have the power to transform your health.

They also contain minerals in forms that your body can easily absorb such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, silicon and sulphur.

The collagen and gelatin in bone broth supports hair growth and helps to keep your nails strong.

The glucosamine in bone broth can actually stimulate the growth of new collagen, repair damaged joints and reduce pain as well as being very high in the anti-inflammatory amino acids glycine and proline.

Here is a simple recipe for a broth designed for a large slow cooker, but can be adjusted to suit smaller cookers.

Ingredients

– 2-3 roasted chicken carcasses (approx. 2 lbs. of bones), you can use beef or other bones if you choose. *Ask your butcher or chop larger bones into smaller pieces, ideally 2 to 3 inches thick. Smaller bones expose more bone marrow and allow for easier absorption into broth.
– 1 or 2 medium onions, unpeeled & quartered
– 1 head of garlic, unpeeled, cut in half crosswise
– 2 celery ribs, cut in 1 to 2 inch pieces
– 2 carrots, cut in 1 to 2 inch pieces
– 5 sprigs of fresh thyme
– 5 sprigs of fresh parsley
– 1 bay leaf
– 1-1/2 teaspoons peppercorns
– 1-2 tablespoon cider vinegar
– Water

Directions

Add all of the ingredients to slow cooker. Cook on low for 10-12 hours. While still hot, pour through a strainer to remove the solids.

Pour broth into a large bowl or container, cover, and refrigerate overnight or until completely chilled. Scrape the hardened fat from the top and discard.

Broth can be refrigerated for up to 5 days. For extended storage, it should be frozen

You can use broth as a base for a soup or add meat and vegetables to it to make up a complete meal.
