Fatty fish is a great food for sexual health and provides many benefits to the body such as the heart and brain. Health psychologist, Dr. Lynn Edlen-Nezin recommends salmon, herring or omega-3 fortified eggs to “increase dopamine production … pluses for the libido.” (1)
Here is a great recipe for women recommended by The Times of India.
“Figs have traditionally been used as an aphrodisiac. To treat sexual weakness, soak a couple of figs in a cup of milk overnight and eat them in the morning.”
It also goes on to say that an additional health benefit to eating figs is that,” Figs are a great source of dietary fiber and make you feel satiated…great option for those who want to lose weight.” (2)
Dark chocolate is another wonderful food for sexual health. It contains phenyethlamine which is an endorphin that gets released in the brain. Endorphins are the feel good hormones released by the body.
There was a study in the Journal of Sexual Medicine whereby women were given a small piece of dark chocolate daily. The result was that the women “reported significantly greater desire and better overall sexual function than the individuals who abstained.” (3)
Dr. Bhimu Patil of Texas A & M University states that “Watermelon may not be as organ specific as Viagra but it’s a great way to relax blood vessels without any drug side-effects.” (4)
This is a very important food for sexual health and contains very high concentrations of lycopene which is essential for prostate health, the heart and skin.
Egg yolks are “high in protein, which is a source of stamina” according to Keri Glassman, RD. She goes on to say that “they’re a good source for an amino acid L-arginine, which has been shown effective in treating types of heart ailments and erectile dysfunction”. (5)
Zinc is a key nutrient needed by men and is prevalent in the male sex glands. Veal and liver have some of the highest concentrations of zinc ranging from 3 – 8 mg for a 75 gram portion size (about 2.5 ounces). This data can be found at Dieticians of Canada. (6)

Fruits and vegetables are very high in antioxidants and have fantastic benefits for the body. Vegetables especially broccoli contain Vitamin C and this helps with “aids in blood circulation to organs and has also been associated with an improved female libido” according to Keri Glassman.
Contrary to popular belief alcohol and oysters are not the best foods to consume for libido. The reasons are that oysters can be contaminated and sickness may result. Too much alcohol will suppress libido.
