Grocery shopping can be an overwhelming feat to accomplish: 2-for-1 deals, discount club offers, attractive branding, buzzword marketing – Organic, Natural, Heart Healthy. Your initial five-minute grocery list of chicken breast, zucchini, apples and corn cereal becomes a ½ hour of decision-making!
What should you buy? Drive that squeaky wheeled shopping cart down isle 8: Genetically Modified Foods (GM). GM foods start with the scientist in a laboratory rather than the farmer, creating genetically altered species that would not have otherwise existed in nature. These food laboratories are designed to increase crop protection against insects, viruses or herbicide tolerances, ultimately driving down market prices.
Isle 8 has a sale on perfectly plump, delicious red apples…is the saving worth the real cost? According to the WHO (World Health Organization,) national food authorities practice rigorous human health and environment risk assessments, however long-term validity is being questioned.RELATED: RECOMMENDED PLANS FOR YOU
GMO foods health risks
Data sources from USDA, CDC, NKUDIC, NCI-SEER, USDE report that most GMOs are saturated with toxic weed killers linked to cancer, birth defects, endocrine disruption, digestive disorders, liver and kidney damage, pre-mature death, nutritional deficiencies, and immune problems (via gut bacterial disruption).
In addition, the American Academy of Environmental Medicine reviewed GMO studies, and found animals fed GM food suffered from gastrointestinal disorders, immune problems, liver and kidney damage, accelerated aging, insulin problems, reproductive issues, tumors and premature death.
The discount for perfect red delicious apples are increasing visits to the doctors rather than keeping them away. We have greater access to the quantities and varieties of our food supply, however reports indicate that food related illnesses have increased two to ten-fold between 1994 (just before GM food was commercialized) and 1999.
How can you avoid GMO foods health risks?
Why are you saving money on your grocery bill??? Food nourishes the ONLY body you have from birth until death. Ditch the shopping cart and grab a food basket to isle 9: 100% organic- NON-GM foods. A basket of 100% organic will decrease bulk purchasing of highly processed products, containing GM ingredients and limited/detrimental nutritional value.
Educate yourself to become a savvy food safe shopper. Do NOT rely on the food industry’s marketing labels to determine the healthfulness and safety of a product. Your favorite 120-calorie serving of corn cereal branded with “low fat” and “whole grain” food labels, may be healthy but perhaps NOT safe, long-term if GMO’s are included.
The most common GM foods and crop ingredients include:
Soy, cotton, canola, corn, sugar beets, Hawaiian papaya, alfalfa, and squash (zucchini and yellow,) Amino Acids, Aspartame, Ascorbic Acid, Sodium Ascorbate, Vitamin C, Citric Acid, Sodium Citrate, Ethanol, Flavorings (“natural” and “artificial,”) High-Fructose Corn Syrup, Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, Lactic Acid, Maltodextrins, Molasses, Monosodium Glutamate, Sucrose, Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP), Xanthan Gum, Vitamins, Yeast Products.
Read your food labels like a detective
Manufacturers can only label a product 100% organic if it has not been genetically modified or been fed genetically modified feed. Organic products can contain up to 30% GMs! Great resources to avoid GM foods include shopping at local farmer’s markets, food cooperatives (co-ops) or subscribing to a local Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farm.
Those 100% organic red delicious apples may be smaller and little lopsided but they WILL keep the doctor away. Notably, the British Medical Journal actually measured the validity of the Victorian proverb “An apple a day, keeps the doctor away,” and found similar benefits of preventing and delaying vascular death when participants ate one apple a day compared to statin drugs!
