I first discovered Coconut oil when I was visiting Thailand with a vegetarian friend who extolled its virtues to me.  I’ve been a firm believer ever since. Coconut oil is a virtual miracle in a pot that can help with weight loss, skin, fighting the flu, stress, heart disease, kidney problems, high blood pressure, diabetes.

And if that wasn’t enough it can also boost your immune system, improve dental quality and bone strength, improve the quality of your hair leaving it healthy whilst fighting dandruff and a whole host of other amazing benefits. Coconut oil can do all this is because it has three acids; lauric, cparic and caprylic.

The combination of these three acids produce health benefits which include being an antioxidant, anti-fungal, antibacterial, all this and it has soothing qualities as well. Coconut oil has been demonized in the past because it contains saturated fat.

In fact, coconut oil is one of the richest sources of saturated fat known to man, with almost 90% of the fatty acids in it being saturated.  This negative that it was very unhealthy was put about by the corn oil and soy oil industries back in the 70s to reduce consumption of coconut oil in favour of consumers purchasing their own oils.

But luckily for us there is new research that shows saturated fats are harmless. Many massive studies that include hundreds of thousands of people prove that the whole “artery-clogging” idea to some extent is a myth. Before you all scream at me and tell me how fats are bad for you, the truth is that in actual fact coconut oil doesn’t contain your average run-of-the-mill saturated fats like you would find in cheese or steak.

Most of the fatty acids that people eat are what’s known as long-chain fatty acids, but coconut oil has medium-chain fatty acids and these are metabolized differently. They go straight to the liver from the digestive tract, where they are used as a quick source energy or turned into so-called ketone bodies, which can have therapeutic effects on brain disorders like epilepsy and Alzheimer’s. How good is that?

Here in the Western world we still regard coconut oil as a luxury food or an exotic fruit, however, those places where coconuts have been eaten for a very long time are proving to be the healthiest of all.

And you know when it comes to weight loss many people think that you only have to count calories, or carbohydrates or some such to lose weight.  It’s the type of calories you ingest that’s important. As we all know, different foods affect our bodies in different ways.  And dieters will be thrilled to read this.

The medium chain triglycerides in coconut oil can increase energy expenditure compared to the same amount of calories from longer chain fats. Triglycerides in coconut oil have been shown to increase 24 hour energy expenditure by as much as 5%, potentially leading to significant weight loss over the long term.

Woohoo. Apparently it’s due to the way the fatty acids in it are metabolized because the ketone bodies can have an appetite reducing effect.  Exciting stuff eh?

In India and other countries they’ve been using coconut oil for hundreds of years as a hair conditioner.  So if you’ve ever wondered how come Indian women have such beautiful hair, now you know their secret.

This versatile ‘oil’ can also be used as an anti bacterial.  If you apply it to infected areas, not only is it very soothing but it protects the infected area from dust, air, bacteria and viruses.

It’s also very effective if used on bruises as it speeds up the healing process of the damaged tissues. Of course because coconut oil looks solid, it’s actually only when you touch it that you realise how malleable it really is.  It’s perfect as a sun screen and a general skin smoother and the smell is divine too. Coconut oil is good for the inside and the outside of a body!

When used in cooking, coconut oil is great for improving the digestion and can prevent stomach and eating related problems including IBS. Saturated fats have properties that can help in dealing with various bacteria, and can aid in the absorption of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that are vital in keeping you healthy.
