Oil pulling is a powerful detoxifying technique that has recently become very popular as a remedy for many different health ailments. Oil pulling is considered preventative as well as curative. The exciting aspect of this healing method is its simplicity.

The term “oil pulling” refers to the notion that the activity “pulls” toxins from one’s system and/or “pulls” them out through the teeth or mouth when the person spits out the oil solution.

The idea of rinsing one’s mouth with oil is thought to have originated in the ancient Ayurvedic Indian natural medicine text Charaka Samhita, where “oil gargling” was described as a natural remedy for oral diseases such as bleeding gums, cracked lips and for strengthening teeth, gums and the jaw.


In Ayurvedic Medicine it is called Kavala or Gandusha, and is also claimed to cure a range of symptoms ranging from headache, migraine to diabetes and asthma. Ayurveda advises oil gargling to purify the entire system; as it holds that each section of the tongue is connected to different organs such as to the kidneys, lungs, liver, heart, small intestines, stomach, colon, and spine, similarly to reflexology and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Oil pulling therapy can be done using oils like sunflower oil or sesame oil, but more traditionally in the west it has been popularized with coconut oil.

You can do the oil pulling every morning if you like, or several times a week. If for some reason it is not possible for you to you to do this method in the morning, you can do this on an empty stomach at any time of the day. Empty stomach means the food is digested completely. Ideally three or four hours after a meal.

How to do oil pulling

Step 1

Put one tablespoon of coconut oil (or whatever oil you have chosen) into your mouth.

Step 2:

Swish the oil around in your mouth without swallowing it. Move it around in your mouth and through your teeth, as if it was mouthwash (don’t tilt your head back to gargle though). You’ll find that the oil will start to get watery as your saliva mixes with it. Keep swishing.

There is no right way or wrong way to swish and pull oil. Don’t focus on doing it right. Do it with very natural movement. Do this gently, not vigorously, in a relaxed way for about 20 minutes, which is great to why you are getting things ready for the day or for men while they are shaving.

When the oil has become saturated with the toxins it has pulled out, it may become whitish and a thinner, milky consistency, depending on the type of oil used. Each time you oil pull, it can take a different amount of time to get to that point, so 20 minutes is a general rule of thumb, but you can experiment with this.

Step 3:

Spit the oil out, then rinse the mouth with warm salt water. Salt water rinsing can be helpful as an antimicrobial and to soothe any inflammation and has been proven to be effective in rinsing out any toxins which may be left out in the mouth.
