It is interesting to note the arguments that often exist in social situations. And by arguments I mean the rifts and divides that typically place people into one of two groups.

Each side has such strong opinions on where they stand regarding a topic, they will wholeheartedly throw themselves into defending their position.

Some examples include the discussion of things like right and wrong, good and bad, rich and poor, republican and democrat, conservative and liberal, and even boy versus girl.

The healthcare world is no different.

To see a chiropractor or not, to use supplements or not, to exercise or not, or to use this or that or not…the list is exhaustive.

It begs the question how anyone could ever decide what they should or should not do to be healthy.

Even more, if someone knows they’ve been on a bad path, if you’ve been on a bad path yourself, how can you put your best foot forward to start a healthy lifestyle?

What are the best tips on how to live a healthy lifestyle and where do I start?

In any of these social situations, as well as the clinical or academic ones, there are some fundamentals that exist.

It’s like gravity; you may or may not believe in it, you may or may not trust or understand the theories behind it, but if you’re on Earth and you throw a rock in the air, you better believe it’s coming back down!

When it comes to health, similar fundamentals exist.

Therefore, when looking at how to put your best foot forward to live a healthy lifestyle, these are good places to start.

1) Time

Most people know they want to eat well, stay active, get enough sleep, think positive. However, the largest challenge in those tasks is often not the effort itself, rather in the scheduling and prioritizing.

If you don’t make the time to do the things you want to do for yourself, they won’t get done. Therefore, scheduling non-negotiable time to work on you and your lifestyle is a must.

2) Habits and choices

A lifestyle does not come about on fads and trends, rather on habits and choices. There is plenty of information and options regarding the fundamentals on eating, exercising, sleeping, thinking, etc.

It’s your task to choose those items that best fir your life, your goals and your soul so you can create a life with them, not around them.

Trying to fit a gym workout into your schedule versus some other emergency or opportunity is not the same as being fit enough to handle emergencies and benefit from opportunities. Make it a habit by choice and it will be there to support you.

3) Learn

We weren’t born with a manual.

We really don’t know a lot about how we work, even though we grasp at the fundamentals, so stay informed and keep learning about how your body works, how it reacts to its environment and what you do with it.

Along the way, keep studying what options exist and which ones resonate well for you so you can stay congruent in using only the ones that support staying in harmony with who you are.

Don’t beat yourself for not loving the gym…very few people do.

Find out what you do love and nurture that instead.

Stay tuned for Part 2 tomorrow for more tips on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
