Our spine is nothing short of a wonder!
It is like a piece of art mobilized by brilliant engineering. It is made of 26 intricately designed bones we know as vertebrae. These bones are cushioned by soft discs. Made from a jellylike substance, these discs give us the flexibility we need to move freely and also protect the spine by absorbing shocks.

But they are prone to injuries and damage. Sometimes the disc between the vertebrae slips out of place and irritates the surrounding nerves. The condition is called herniated disc or slipped disc and can cause extreme pain and limit mobility.

Here are the first of seven things you need to know about herniated disc injury.
1. There Are Different Types of Herniated Disc
There are three common types of herniated discs: cervical herniated disc, lumbar herniated disc, and Thoracic Herniated Disc.
A lumbar herniated disc is the most common type of herniated disc injuries. It occurs between the first and fifth lumbar vertebrae.
Cervical herniated disc affects the neck area. There are numerous nerve endings in this area. The pain and symptoms you feel depend on which nerve is pinched between the vertebrae.
The third type of herniated disc, the thoracic herniated disc, is a rare form. It occurs in the portion of the spine supported by ribs. It is usually herniated because of a trauma or due to age-related degeneration.
2. There Can Be Many Reasons behind a Slip Disc
While a thoracic herniated disc is caused by a trauma or accident, the lumbar and cervical disc injuries can have different causes. For most people, age-related wear and tear can cause a slipped disc.
With age, the amount of protective fluid in the disc diminishes. A sudden motion such as a twist or turn can also cause a disc to slip. Similarly, the strain caused by lifting a heavy object can also move the disc from its place.
So, while your spine is flexible and the discs play a key role in preventing damage, there is a limit to the strain they can bear. According to a study, certain genes are more prone to herniated discs.
3. Symptoms Include Pain and Numbness
Moderate to severe pain is the most common symptom of the herniated disc because it puts excessive pressure and strain on nerves and muscles. However, the severity of pain may vary from patient to patient depending on the pressure exerted on a nerve.
Some patients may experience numbness or tingling sensations more than pain. The pain may extend to arms and legs as well. Many patients complain of muscle weakness due to herniated spine.
Research proves that the pain is not always the most accurate measure of the extent of the damage. Bowel and bladder incontinence is also a symptom of severe herniation.
