There is little doubt that our environment is polluted with toxins and harmful substances. Toxins can damage the body in an insidious and cumulative way. Fortunately, the body has a built in detoxification process working 24/7. A toxin is defined as any compound that has a detrimental effect on cell function or structure.

“In nature we plainly see daily and seasonal cycles that support the survival of plants and animals. For example, birds fly south, whales migrate, and leaves turn red and fall off the trees in the fall. While all this is happening, we only put on or take off a sweater. Our survival, just like the birds, depends on being connected to these natural cycles through eating seasonally, cleansing regularly and living in harmony with nature”, explains Dr. Douilard beautifully. Our detox system has to be fully operational every day, it doesn’t get lunch or coffee break.  But when the burden of input exceeds what we can eliminate, that’s when we have a problem.

How Often Should I Detoxify?

One of the best ways to optimize your detoxification systems is to stop eating before sundown and let your internal organs rest, detoxify and rejuvenate. In the evening between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., the liver begins its daily washing cycle. According to researcher Frank Scheer from Harvard Medical School, every cell of the body has an internal clock that regulates the body’s metabolism. Studies have shown that the liver secretes more glutathione peroxidase and other antioxidants at night. Glutathion is mother of all antioxidants, the master detoxifier and maestro of the immune system.  To let the liver do its job in the evening, it is best to get to bed early. [1]

The Once – Weekly Detox

One day cleanse’ is about helping you jump-start the process of getting on track with long-term lifestyle changes, give your body and especially digestive system a rest.  Through the ages and religions there was one day a week of lighter meals – animal protein, dairy and alcohol free.  You can choose to do just that – take some food that is heavier and harder to digest and substitute it with simple vegetarian/vegan meals.  You may choose to do fasting and stay on a liquid diet like freshly squeezed vegetable juices or vegetable broth combined with sauna to sweat out toxins, extra rest and sleep.

End of the month detox is a good way to take a pause.  It could be only one day or a weekend of ‘rest’.  Try to eat very alkalizing foods, like fruits and vegetables, and stay away from acid forming foods. Acid forming foods are things like processed and refined foods (cakes, cookies, breads, pastas), animal products (fish, meat, poultry, eggs, dairy, cheese), coffee, artificial sweeteners, refined sugar, additives and preservatives, sodas, candy, etc.

Make a habit of cleansing at the turn of each season. Detox and nourish your lymphatic system.  The lymphatic system drains the wastes from your body and controls and regulates your immune system.  When the lymph system become sluggish, you may experience one or more symptoms like aches and pains, swelling, allergies, fatigue, constipation, colds and weak immunity.  You may want to do a 7-14 day cleanse using seasonal detoxifying foods and herbs.

If 4 times a year doesn’t work for you, try at least twice per year – spring and autumn.  Spring’s first line of duty is to detox all of the excess fats and proteins and holiday food we stored all winter.  It is nature’s weight loss season.  By October after summer heating and swelling our bodies, the blood, liver and lymph are ready to eliminate toxins. Choose what feels right for you right now and next week/month try something different. Always listen to your body, tune in and feel what the best option is for you at any particular time.  Detoxify your body for optimal health.
