To be ever young

Ahhh to be eternally youthful and never age! Growing old doesn’t have to mean looking older and getting wrinkles. In fact, people are looking more youthful all the time. There is only one way to look younger with less wrinkles and that is by taking care of yourself now! Genetics, natural aging, menopause etc, are things that we can’t control. But at least there are environmental factors we can control!

Below are a few of the top suggestions to follow to avoid those wrinkles later:

1) Use sunscreen

Avoid the sun and use sunscreen – prolonged, unprotected sun exposure will result in premature aging. UV rays cause 90% of the visible signs of aging. UV rays break down the collagen and elastin fibers, which keep the skin strong and firm.

What can you do?

Avoid direct sun between the hours of 10:00am and 2:00pm; select clothing, cosmetic products, and glasses/lenses with UV protection, and wear a wide brimmed hat for shade. Always apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or greater and zinc oxide 20 minutes before sun exposure and every two hours thereafter. Keep in mind 80% of a person’s lifetime sun exposure is acquired by the age of 18.

2) Don’t smoke

Smoking is a very bad idea from top to bottom and, aside from the sun, this is probably the worst thing for your skin. Smoking and its chemicals cause damage both inside and out. Smoking accelerates the skin aging process causing skin to look dry, causes age spots, damage collagen and elastin, as well as adding a ton of wrinkles to your face – especially around your eyes and lips. Smokers also have delayed wound healing and develop an orange or gray complexion. A huge issue is that smoking reduces the blood supply to the skin – thus causing the loss of collagen and elastin.

3) Eat more fruits and veggies

This isn’t just for wrinkle prevention – we need to be doing this everyday anyway! Eating a plant based diet nourishes your body with many of the vitamins and minerals your skin needs to stay healthy.

Vitamin C is known to be a huge contributor to collagen production. Collagen is a protein that helps the cells and blood vessels in your skin grow. Collagen and elastin is what makes your skin firm.

Free radicals are the toxic product of cell metabolism.

They can also be introduced to your body through the skin in cigarette smoke, pesticides, pollution and other environmental factors. Antioxidants help protect the cells from toxins – especially in the skin.

Antioxidant vitamins are C, E, K, beta-carotene and lycopene. Think color when you pick your fruits and veggies. In other words, the good fats are essential to reducing those wrinkles. Fatty acids are responsible for keeping the cell membrane healthy. It basically acts as a barrier to external toxins but it is also the pathway for nutrients and waste to get in and out of the cell. It also influences the cell to hold water, therefore reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Some of the foods highest in Omega 3 are seafood, walnuts, canola oil, and flax seed.

6) Don’t over wash your face

Baby your face! Excessively washing your face can dry your skin out and the underlying cells. You can strip your skin of important hydrating oils. This can make your complexion appear dull and wrinkled. Use a gentle soap and avoid deodorant soaps or alcohol. Aim to clean your face no more than twice per day.

7) Drink water

Water is essential for maintaining moisture. It also aids in ridding the body of toxins. When your skin is properly hydrated, it naturally fills in some of those cracks and provides a clean, natural look. Try to drink ½ to 1 gallon of water per day to stay hydrated. Try to stay away from alcohol as it dehydrates the skin.

8) Exercise

Aerobic exercise promotes blood flow to the skin. When this happens, your body increases the rate of new cell growth and production of moisture and oils. As mentioned above, hydration plays a big part in filling in those fine lines. Aim for 30-60 minutes, most day of the week for cardio exercise.

9) Use moisturizer and natural products

Moisturizers are beneficial in helping to lubricate the skin and hide fine lines. There is so much information about what products are the best. There are a great many products out there to explore and some do work better than others, but it really comes down to what works for you and your budget.
