There have been many articles lately, giving different opinions about CrossFit.

This one will attempt to give you an understanding of what CrossFit is, and why all the fuss.

Maybe you have seen some CrossFitters doing a workout of the day (WOD) in the park, or in your local gym doing some pretty crazy looking exercises. Through CrossFit methodology, clean eating, nutrition and community spirit, CrossFit aims to make your life better by providing a holistic health approach. So, before we judge these fitness fanatics, let’s take a look at

Who does Crossfit, and what’s it all about.

Created by Coach Greg Glassman in 2000, CrossFit is not your average specialized fitness program. It is the preferred fitness program for law enforcement and many, due to its application and relevance to life situations. It is a deliberate attempt to optimize physical competence, using ten recognized fitness domains: Cardiovascular and Respiratory Endurance, Stamina, Strength, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Coordination, Agility, Balance, and Accuracy.

Through constantly varied, high intensity functional movements, CrossFit aims to make life better for its members. Anyone can take part in the fun, but challenging new sport – from children to elderly. For recreational athletes it provides the training direction and competition to keep you motivated, and to help you realize your dreams of a healthier you. Even professional athletes can use CrossFit to enhance their performances.

The Crossfit workouts are modified though a series of exciting challenges, and are used to monitor your CrossFit progress as you get stronger, fitter, faster. Coaches can design their own workouts for members to reach particular goals, and there are many CrossFitbenchmark challenges available for all to experience. Angie, Barbara, Chelsea, Diane, Elizabeth, Fran, Grace, Helen, Isabel, Jackie, Karen, Linda, Mary and Nancy or better known as the “Girls”, are workouts that will challenge any fitness level.

CrossFit inc Founder Greg Glassman explains why a girl’s name: “I want to explain the workout once and then give it a name. I thought that anything that left you flat on your back, looking up at the sky asking ‘what just happened to me?’ deserved a females name.”

CrossFit does not use the term “gym”, but rather a “box” as it was created out of Coach Glassman’s garage. The lack for fancy machines and mirrors puts the crossfitter into a totally different environment and state of mind compared to the more familiar franchise gym. You will not find bulging muscle men grunting at themselves in the mirror as they perform bicep curls! CrossFit prefers to call your ability to perform and your desire to develop as the most beautiful human trait. You can expect to hear CrossFit box owners say “leave your ego at the door”, providing you with a relaxed feeling and a sense of humility. Now with vanity at an all time low, you will see that what you put into your training, you will get out.

CrossFit’s rapid development has been aided by sports apparel giant Reebok, who joined military forces to help promote and create the ultimate fitness competition, the “Reebok CrossFit Games”. A grueling two week fitness festival held once a year, dedicated to finding the fittest man and woman on the planet ( It starts with a world-wide open competition, which anyone can enter. Each week for five weeks a workout is launched for all to attempt. Nobody knows the workout until a minute before the competitions launch, live online .

After the open, competitors with the highest scores move onto a regional event, that selects and prepares the fittest of the fit for the main event, the “World Cup” of fitness, the Reebok CrossFit games.

Issues have been discussed across the Fitness community regarding CrossFit.

Some people accuse CrossFit of not considering proper technique, having higher injury rates and basically dangers found around every corner. But doesn’t this apply to anything that we do in the fitness industry? If the personal trainer does not hold the required education and experience to coach and mentor clients, would it not be the fitness professional who is held responsible for any mishaps that may occur, rather than labelling the entire trainer profession a liability? It is up to the fitness professional to ensure continued personal development is carried out to maintain standards and business growth. CrossFitinc not only welcomes professional expertise from various specializations , but provides another development path to educate its members and coaches.

It may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but it is a fantastic option for those people, who may be discouraged from the conventional gym environment, or tired of not seeing the results they crave for. Few can argue that CrossFit achieves results, as this no nonsense approach to training does not allow excuses get in its way. The development of social bonding and camaraderie only heightens the CrossFit experience.

All I can leave you with is this, “just give it a try, you just might like it”.
