The secret is out. Yoga is one of the most popular forms of mind-body exercise on Planet Earth!
OK so that’s not much of a secret. It’s pretty much common knowledge at this point.
Must Know Benefits of Yoga for Men.RELATED: RECOMMENDED PLANS FOR YOU
Popularized by a multitude of women, sporting fancy yoga pants and gear to match, yoga is also quite the hookup for men these days.
Admit it. You’ve always had the urge to hop into a yoga class before or after work, but never had the courage.
Well I’m here to tell you, you won’t be sorry if you do. The benefits far outweigh the risks, which are few and far between.
I feel compelled to start this benefits package off with flexibility. When was the last time you were able to bend over at the waist and touch your toes with your legs straight?
I’m guessing it’s been a while. Did you know this is a predisposition to getting lower back pain?
The good news is, you can change that instantly by improving the flexibility in your hamstrings and lower back. You are guaranteed to work on these areas in every yoga class. At least, that’s been the case with every class I’ve ever attended in my life.
And that’s not all. You can expect to become more flexible in all areas of your body. A supple spine adds years to your life. The more flexible you are, the easier it will be to do physical activities and daily chores.
More Restful Sleep.
A lot of men have a hard time sleeping peacefully through the night. They either wake up and can’t fall back to sleep or they just struggle to get to sleep in the first place. You may know this condition by the term insomnia.
Whatever you call it, yoga has been known to help relieve sleeplessness and put the body back into a more normal nighttime cycle.
In a study done by the Harvard Medical School, a daily dose of yoga showed improvements in efficiency of sleep, wake time, and there was a reduction in latency.
Instead of reaching for a sleeping pill, grab your yoga mat and pose your way to sleep.
Life tends to be riddled with too much stress. Worry about providing for your family, getting bills paid on time, meeting deadlines at work and setting your Fantasy Football lineup every fall through winter. This can become quite debilitating after a while.
Good thing yoga has your back. The slow and steady holding of poses and deep diaphragmatic breathing that you encounter while practicing bodes really well for stress relief.
As an added bonus, you need to concentrate really hard on what you are doing and how you are holding your body in a certain position. By default, this improves your mental acuity and ability to focus.
If the world is out of balance, it’s not going to be a happy place. The same can be said about your body. If you have poor balance, you will struggle to do even the most pedestrian of activities like getting out of a chair.
Because a lot of yoga poses involve standing on one leg or using opposing limbs for support, you are forced to improve your balance. This comes in really handy when you step off the edge of an uneven sidewalk and need to make an uber quick correction before face planting.
Jammed joints and tight muscles lead to pain and discomfort. As a by-product of obtaining more flexibility, yoga helps lengthen your muscles and makes your connective tissue more elastic. The end result is a reduction in pain and more fluidity with movement patterns.
Let’s be realistic. Yoga classes have a high percentage of women in attendance, and there is also a high amount of female instructors. It may sound like a very random benefit, but if you don’t like the bar scene, yoga class is a good place to meet women.
Just to be clear, I kept mentioning going to yoga class, but that doesn’t have to be the case. You can simply get a DVD and practice at home. Unlike some other workouts, it’s not that complicated or hard to follow. Drop the ego at all times and only go as far as your body will allow.
OK, it’s now up to you. Go pose your way to better health and get yourself out of threat.
