Meditation is about purposefully practicing in a way that flexes your mindfulness muscle thereby making you more in tune and mindful.
It is a means of transforming the mind and using these techniques you can practice mindful eating to help control cravings and overeating, and use meditation for stress relief to prevent “comfort eating”.
Meditation vs Weight Gain!RELATED: RECOMMENDED PLANS FOR YOU
People often put on weight as they comfort themselves with food or use alcohol and/or food for stress relief. Meditation helps you to become more aware of your thoughts and actions, including those that relate to food. So meditation can help with both binge eating as well as emotional eating.
Excessive weight gain and weight loss resistance are also very often outcomes of hormonal imbalances in the body which can be related to stress. Meditation helps to restore balance and reduce stress so if you are overweight you may start to lose pounds.
We also live in a fast paced world, constantly switched on and plugged in and not only is this increasing our stress levels it is affecting our sleep, which is harmful to our bodies and minds.
We spend most of our time in the beta brainwave state, this is associated with normal waking consciousness and a heightened state of being alert and critical reasoning, and whilst this is important for us to function effectively throughout the day it also translates into stress, anxiety and restlessness leading to issues with sleep amongst other health problems such as increased blood pressure.
Meditation helps us to reach Alpha and Theta brainwaves
These are more relaxing and help us to deal with our day to day lives in a more calm, collected and focused way. Theta is where we experience visualizations; it is the brainwave that inspires creativity, visualization – using the creative power of your mind.
Whilst meditation is not the solution on its own, it is one of the tools we can use. There is a lot of evidence that it may work for those who practice it regularly and from personal experience I can say that my meditation practice has been life changing.
Techniques to try…
Try some or all the techniques of meditation to lose weight below, find one that resonates and works for you. The more regularly you can practise them the more benefits you will see.
Scanning: Sit or lie comfortably and starting with you head working down through your neck to your arms, torso, legs and feet, notice if you feel any tension and release this, relax all these areas as you work through them
Focus on the Breath: sit comfortably and focus on our breath, notice your inhalation and exhalation, let your tension go with each breath. When you find your mind wandering just gently bring it back to your breath.
Mantra: sit or lie in a comfortable position and repeat a simple mantra, allow your thoughts to come and go and just gently bring your focus back to the mantra,
Visualization: Imagine being somewhere that has happy memories for you and imagine any tension being released and feel those happy thoughts washing away the tension. Make your images as vivid and colourful as possible, remember any smells – you might find this challenging at first but it does get easier every time you practice.
Guided: There are many free guided meditations available and if you contact me, I can send you a link to FREE guided meditations that I have for my clients. If you are new to mediation or just looking for a difference experience then guided meditation can do this for you as you will be guided by a narrator to create a scene in your mind. These scenes are always positive and worked to change your brains neural pathways to give you a new experience.
