Most of us have always wondered how we can burn more calories without spending hours in the gym, sweating and waiting for the machine that you are not even sure how to use properly. Well, since most of us lead a hectic lifestyle and sometimes going to the gym just doesn’t seem very convenient thanks to our busy schedule, here is the answer to how you can effectively burn more calories in a short period of time!

Forget about using the treadmill or a crosstrainer

and instead spend 5-8 minutes skipping over a rope or a Reebok platform. Research has proven that skipping for 10 minutes is equivalent to 30 minutes of running! Plus the other advantage, you don’t really need to be a member of a gym to use a skipping rope.

Simple exercises vs complex exercises

I know that sitting on a machine and pushing your legs or arms forward and back seems like an ideal way of working out and burning calories with no complexity to it –  but do you really think you’re working on your maximum capacity? Well think again!

For example, using a leg press for  three minutes, you might burn 9 to 18.5 calories, depending on your weight; doing squats without any weight burn 25 to 36 calories. So, while you’re doing the maths, let me just tell you that doing a whole body weight exercise burn at least twice as many calories as machines such as leg press or chest press or any other machine that you just sit on. No more of waiting around till the machines in the gym become available! You now have other options!

5 sneaky ways to burn more calories during a regular workout

Don’t take too many breaks between exercises

Work hard or go home should be the theme when you finally decide to make the effort and come to the gym.  Remember, you’re mainly burning calories when you’re exercising and not when you’re standing and chatting away. A great idea of how to overcome the thought of spending too much time in the gym is to set your mind for 6 exercises with or without equipment, allocate time to each exercise and stick to it:  e.g.  60 seconds per exercise doing 2-3 sets will allow you to leave the gym in 12-18 minutes.

Drink a cup of green tea before a workout

Green tea contains caffeine, which, as some of you may already know, enhances your physical performance – gives you energy to work harder and you end up burning more calories.  Furthermore, drinking a couple of cups every day will raise your resting metabolic rate by at least 3% and helps you to get rid off of toxins in your body thanks to its antioxidant effects.

World full of technology so get a heart rate monitor

If you’re relatively new to training and you would like to make the most of your new lifestyle, it’s worth investing into a heart rate monitor. A heart rate monitor is an electronic device that allows you to continuously monitor your heart rate while exercising and assess how many calories you have burned in your workout.  If the intensity of your workout is too low, you’re not burning as many calories as you may think and when the intensity is too high, you could be in danger of hurting yourself and defeats the ability of your body to burn fat efficiently. Using a heart rate monitor will show you exactly where you stand during your training so you can easily re-assess and re-adjust your workout if necessary. No more excuses this time!
