There are many reasons why we would be addicted to sugar

The first is the psychology of addiction. We must think of reward systems. Molecular Brain Research Volume 124, Issue 2, 19 May 2004, Pages 134–142, it was found that there are opiate-like effects of sugar on gene expression in reward areas of the rat brain. What does this mean? Sugar creates a feeling of having been rewarded. As we know, opiates are quite addictive and if our rearing was such that “Good children get candy”, when we want that wholesome feeling, the first thing we do is grab the nearest sugar containing food. This sensation is as powerful as opium!!!! So, for all parents start by giving your kids a hug as a reward NOT CANDY!

The adrenal glands are our powerhouses for energy, they produce cortisol and cortisone and function to regulate the level of sugar in the blood.  If we are not careful about our diet and have an overactive lifestyle, our adrenals will begin to not work as properly and will require more blood sugar to function correctly.

Candida  feeds on sugar in our intestine and metabolizes sugar into acetaldehyde and alcohol. If too much sugar is eaten, then Candida will predominate in our intestine and we will suffer from digestive problems, headaches, irritability and also suffer the craving to eat more sugar to keep our candida alive.

Zinc

Zinc is necessary for insulin production and release. Zinc deficiency can be caused by metal poisoning of copper, iron, lead, mercury or cadmium. These minerals act by replacing zinc in the insulin molecule this will be the main cause of insulin resistance.

In insulin resistance, cells in the body cannot respond adequately to the insulin hormone. To compensate for the insulin resistance, the pancreas secretes more insulin. Soon enough high insulin levels can no longer compensate for elevated sugars .

Most people are in fact addicted to sugar whether in the form of candy or refined foods. It is rare to find someone without a craving, and if you do, be sure to ask what they are doing!

How to tame your sweet tooth

Increase Zinc, and support your insulin pathway!

Find something in replace of sugar that you can give yourself as a reward. In other words, find a hobby!

Support and nourish your adrenal glands. You can do this using Licorice tea, which is an age old adrenal tonic. Although it works very well, if you have high blood pressure stay away!

Gymnenma Sylvestra is an Ayurvedic herb, used for lowering blood sugar (Journal of Ethnopharmacology, Volume 67, Issue 3, 30 November 1999, Pages 367–372), and also has some wonderful properties of diminishing the actual taste of sweet. So, I suggest – eat a prepared meal and then have some gymnema afterwards to lower blood sugar and prevent any snacks after.

5) Do not forget to eat your veggies and proteins vs. refined sweets and starches to replace your minerals and vitamins to nourish your body and avoid food cravings.
