Implementing changes in yourself can be challenging , whether this is work related, lifestyle or diet related.

Whenever I get my clients to make changes I am reminded about the whole idea of trying to change too many things at once, becoming overwhelmed and failing to effectively implement any changes at all.

Most people know what to do in order to eat healthily but often they don’t implement the changes as they don’t have any accountability and so it never becomes a habit. We are all guilty at one time or another of thinking we will do it “tomorrow” and we all know that tomorrow never comes!


So to create habits and long term success, we need to avoid being overwhelmed as when this happens 9 times out of 10 we give up as it becomes too difficult. If people fail on one thing they’re most likely to think, “Oh well it doesn’t matter, if I can’t get that one thing right why bother with the rest” – does this sound familiar?

Healthy eating is not about strict limitations or depriving yourself, it’s about feeling great, having more energy, improving your mood and having a great outlook.

Once you learn how to create a tasty, varied and healthy diet and make small changes over time, these will all add up and healthy eating will become a habit. I also find that once my clients have more energy, a better mood, have more confidence and feel great – this motivates them to continue healthy eating and to make it a habit as the incentive is there to feel this way all the time

Set yourself up for success

To set yourself up for success, think of making a number of small, manageable steps, this can be adding a salad to your diet once a day, increasing your water intake to an extra glass of water every day for a week and then increasing that to two glasses in week two.

As your small changes become habit, you can continue to add more healthy choices, make one change every month and after a year you will have acquired 12 healthy habits.

Why do we struggle?

In order to be successful with making changing it is important to understand why we struggle and to avoid these pitfalls.

Most of us try to implement these habits alone and if you end up stumbling because of one slip up, there is no one to support you and cheer you on and then you may end up failing as we tell ourselves, that it is too hard and talk ourselves out of it. We convince ourselves that it was never going to work so we can justify our actions and feel better about it – it’s human nature we have all done this possibly many times over.

I know I have!

So how can you make changes successfully?

Find your “cheerleaders”

I tell my clients this all the time…….. Find a support network, these are the people who will support you, the ones who will offer to share a piece of cake with you, if you really, really want it.

Sadly, most often the people who are the closest to you are not the people who will be your cheerleaders, it is not that they want us to fail, but if we are successful at making changes it means they may have to look at their habits and lifestyle and make changes and that may be uncomfortable for them.

Moderation is the Key

Healthy eating doesn’t have to be all or nothing, it is about balance, you should feel satisfied at the end of a meal, and you should have energy, no cravings and not feel stuffed.

You don’t have to be perfect, but you do have to take action and start! Small steps and changes will help you enjoy having a healthy diet and will make a difference to the way you think and feel and this is when eating healthy becomes a habit.
