Water retention can be a culprit of why we feel so “heavy” or bloated. I can’t count the times I have heard my clients pinch their abdomen and say to me “what is this?” while they recall what they ate the night before.

Water retention is usually caused by several factors. Here are a few suggestions on how to decrease your water retention and discover new ways to feel lighter!

Here are 5 amazing ways to feel lighter today:

1) Drink Up!

The body retains water when you are not consuming enough of it. Your body needs water for the cells in your body, so if you are not drinking enough, your body will hold onto water. Staying hydrated will prevent this from occurring.

You should make sure you drink enough water throughout the day. A man should take about 13 cups per day and a woman 9 cups. Drinking a lot of water also helps the body flush out toxins. One of the strategies I use to remind myself to drink water is to keep a water bottle with me at all times, to constantly remind yourself to drink up!

2) Sodium

is one of the electrolytes responsible for water retention in the body.

Excessive amounts in our diet, can contribute high blood pressure and lead to problems for your body on a cellular level. If we are in excess of sodium , our body excretes the sodium under the skin and it attracts water, leading to fluid retention.

In order to prevent this from occurring, dietary changes to decrease your sodium limit to 2,400 mg a day (less than 2,000mg per day for people who have high blood pressure) should occur. Foods that are frozen, fast foods, canned soups, even soft drinks have sodium in them, so pay attention to the labels of the things you are consuming.

3) Infrared sauna

is a great way to lose water.

Infrared saunas penetrate three times deeper into the adipose tissue than conventional saunas; which helps detox the body. When you are in the sauna your body’s core temperature increases.

Your body works hard to bring its temperature down and begins to produce a healthy sweat as your heart rate increases. Your body burns calories and water in the infrared sauna while making you feel relaxed!

4) De-stress

Chronic stress can lead to the release of a stress hormone called Cortisol.

Cortisol is a hormone that cannot only lead to weight gain but also visceral fat stores around the midsection, which can be detrimental to your health.

Having stress management strategies on hand will help decrease the chances that you will hold on to fat stores due to cortisol levels. Meditation, exercise, massage therapy are good ways to minimize stress levels.

5) Chewing your food and eating slowly.

Something that many of us don’t do! Chewing your food longer, releases enzymes to help you digest your food properly and it also prevents the body from bringing in access air into the digestive tract causing bloating. Chewing your food properly will also help in the absorption of the food, because it is properly broken down.

All of these 5 factors are simple ways to feel lighter and also provide you with great strategies on reaching your health and wellness goals!
