Spring is here! This is the time when people like to clean up their diets and shed those excess pounds accumulated in the winter.
Time for some Spring cleaning

1. Eat seasonally
As the weather gets warmer and the days get longer, an abundance of crops start to appear. The winter is the time for hibernation: heavier foods, comforting stews, rich and earthy root vegetables.
Spring time calls for a lighter diet containing more fresh produce, to energise you and get your lymph moving.
This is the season for asparagus, artichokes, broccoli, greens, nettles, watercress, leeks, rhubarb, kiwi, sorrel, cauliflower and kale. Most of these are potent liver foods so you can see that nature is intent on supporting our liver and its detox capacity.
2. Encourage healthy detoxification
I don’t mean do a draconian detox (although I am a big fan of soup fasting or the odd day of juice fasting). I’m talking about stimulating your lymphatic system to flush toxins effectively to reduce the stress on your other elimination channels: the kidneys, liver, gut and skin.
Start the day with warm water and lemon, and include relevant herbs in your daily routine. Cleavers, or sticky willy, grows everywhere.

3. Say no to processed foods
Break the comfort food habit and give up refined sugar.
Foods that are high in refined carbohydrate or processed tend to be devoid of nutrients. This means you eat and you are still hungry afterwards because your body is craving the nutrients it requires.
You may also notice your energy levels fluctuating as your blood sugar crashes and rises again on your next snack.
Weaning yourself off sugar means reducing your risk of obesity, heart disease and diabetes. You might also notice an improvement in your skin, digestion, sleep quality, energy levels and mood.
4. Stop keeping junk food & alcohol in the house
This one is a no-brainer! If you don’t keep things you want to avoid eating or drinking in the house, you are less likely to overindulge.
If you are stuck in a cycle of comfort eating or eating due to boredom, think about taking up a new activity or doing some form of exercise.
If you snack between meals (and if you snack on the right things, it will help keep your blood sugar stable), restock the fridge with crudités and hummus or guacamole, lean organic chicken or fish and get inventive with your food.
If you don’t like the taste of water, infuse it with fruit or fresh herbs and replace that cordial in the cupboard.
