Being vegan is not just about a particular diet or way of eating, it’s a particular lifestyle
A lifestyle that does not promote any animal cruelty, and this extends to what cosmetics and skin care products a vegan will use.

There are quite a few companies now that offer vegan skin care, which is great, but you also end up paying an above average price for it.
Another way to keep your skin care range more natural, and lower the cost, is to make it yourself.
Here is a ‘recipe’ for some mint and cucumber body oil:
– 55 grams aloe vera oil
– 25 grams cucumber seed oil
– 25 grams camellia seed oil
– 5 drops of spearmint essential oil
– 1 drop of vitamin E T50
This oil is great for general use, but specifically has a cooling and soothing property which may benefit an area that needs soothing due to minor cuts or infections or, for example, on your legs after shaving them.
Aloe vera benefits
Aloe vera has historically been used to soothe skin conditions such as eczema, dry skin and sun burn. It helps by putting a protective layer over the area whilst the skin heals itself underneath.
Its natural moisturising and anti-inflammatory properties work towards healing the skin.
A substance called Gibberellin in the aloe vera helps to stimulate new cell growth, and thus accelerates the healing process.
Antioxidants within the aloe vera, such as vitamin C and E, help improve the firmness of the skin and rehydrate it.
Aloe vera has also been used to treat acne and stretch marks as it can aid in scar repair.
Cucumber seed oil
Cucumber seed oil contains nutrients, such as oleic and linoleic acids, that help moisturise dry skin. Potassium within the oil will also help to combat dry skin. Antioxidants such as vitamin C, will help fight against ageing, whilst the cucumber naturally soothes and cools the area.
Camellia seed oil
Camellia seed oil is another oil that has anti-ageing properties as a natural moisturiser.
It can also help to heal damaged and dry skin.
Spearmint essential oil
Spearmint essential oil is relaxing and cooling but also an antiseptic. This may be useful on cracked or damaged skin to help heal it faster.
However, spearmint essential oil should not be used on pregnant women as it may stimulate blood flow to the uterus. This could always be left out of the mix if you would rather.
Finally, vitamin E T50
This can help protect against the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. As well as helping prevent ageing, the addition of this vitamin oil can stop the mixture going rancid.
Combine the oils in a container and mix
Next, add the essential oils and mix again. The mixture is now ready to transfer to a dark bottle for storage. It is best to store oils in a cool and dark place to help to keep them from spoiling.
If you would rather have a far simpler approach to your skincare, another route to go down that is suitable for vegans is coconut oil.
Pure virgin coconut oil is the best and can be bought from supermarkets or online.
It softens the skin and protects it against ageing with its antioxidant properties. Some believe that it may help prevent liver spots on the hands and stop the skin sagging and wrinkling as it ages.
Coconut oil hydrates the skin and moisturises.
A lot of products on the market contain water which may make the skin appear rehydrated for a while, but is not long-lasting. Coconut oil sinks deeper into the skin to rehydrate. It also has anti-bacterial properties.
It also has healing properties on the skin, and can be used as an after-sun lotion.
It is the free radical damage that ages our skin and makes us look older. It is believed that coconut oil is one of the best ways that we can minimise this damage.
Coconut oil can also be used to remove make-up, moisturise your hair and as natural massage oil. The oil can be kept in its original container and a small amount taken out and warmed up in the palm of your hand whenever you need to use it.
