It’s summertime! We should be full of energy and ready to take on any adventure, right? Well, if you are lacking in energy it may simply be because you are missing out on the foods of the season that are sure to grant you with a maximum boost of energy.  What’s the best way to add more energy boosting fruits and vegetables to your diet?

First of all, you want to be sure you are choosing the best produce of the season.  Secondly, grab it vine-ripened when available as well as organic.  Thirdly, get out your high-powered blender because we are going to whip up some great tasting energy drinks! Here are my best summertime smoothie recipes:

Chocolate Covered Cherry:

1 cup almond milk

1 serving chocolate protein mix of choice

½ cup frozen cherries

4-5 cubes frozen mango

¼ cup rolled old fashioned oats

Cherries are a natural source of melatonin which will help you get a better nights rest, allowing you to wake more rested and full of energy!

Mangos are high in antioxidants and these immune-boosting naturally occurring “ingredients” will rev your system into high gear to rejuvenate you on a cellular level.  Here’s a bonus tip: mangos may also help to reduce body fat!

Summertime smoothie recipes

Razz It Up:

1 cup almond milk

1 serving vanilla protein mix of choice

5 frozen cherries

10 frozen blueberries

5 large blackberries

4 mint leaves

Mint is a natural stimulant that can increase awareness and reduce stress as well.  Although it is great with this elixir of berries, mint is also good in many other summer smoothie mixes.

Berries of any kind are packed with flavonoids which have been found to protect against cancer and other diseases.  What’s also great is that cherries have a low GI rating.  This means that when you eat berries, your blood sugar will not produce drastic spikes, which essentially lead to declines in energy levels.

Electrified:

1 cup coconut water

1 serving vanilla protein mix of choice

½ cup frozen green apple cubes

1-2 tablespoons wheat germ

½ tsp cinnamon

Green apples are a great, natural detoxifying food.  When we rid our bodies of toxins, we will naturally feel lighter and more energetic! The sugar in apples is predominantly fructose and it is a naturally slower metabolized sugar, allowing your blood sugar to remain more stable.

Coconut water, a great refreshing drink on its own, lends this smoothie energy supporting properties through its hydration capabilities.  It is well known that when we are dehydrated, our energy levels decline.

Wheat germ may not be a fruit or vegetable, but with its nutritional profile of B-vitamis, fiber and protein, it is definitely worth adding.

Chasing Monkeys:

1 cup almond milk

½ avocado

½ frozen banana

1 cup spinach (or kale)

1 serving chocolate protein mix of choice

1 tablespoon chia seeds

An avocado in a fruity smoothie??! Yes and if you have not tried this type of combination, you must do it today! Avocados contain potassium which enhances cellular muscle performance and folate, which boosts cell renewal.  If there is a quicker response to cell turnover, you’re likely to be healthier and have more natural energy.  It is also rich in the good fats we need to enhance overall improved health.

Bananas are just plain great for any smoothie and will make them thick and delish! Regarding energy, they are loaded with vitamin C, fiber and antioxidants which are all attributable to keeping you on your game and full of energy.

Spinach is a plant source of iron and we all know that when our iron levels are normal, we are likely to be energized!

So skip the store bought energy drinks and blend one up yourself.  It will give you what you need to power through that next workout or a full days work at the office.
