Last time we discussed how Renee Zellweger gained pounds for the role of Bridget Jones not once, but twice. This time we have a look at another celeb weight loss story – Tom Hanks – dating back to 2000.
A little bit about the movie. As you know it is about a system analyst guy (Tom Hanks) from Memphis, Tennessee whose plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean and washed up on an Island and the fight for his life started.

“The idea of looking at four months of constant vigilance as far as what I ate, as well as two hours a day in the gym doing nothing but a monotonous kind of work-out, that was formidable. You have to power yourself through it almost by some sort of meditation trickery. It’s not glamorous.”
The actor had to put on 50 lbs (23 kg) during pre-production to make him look like a middle-aged man. It comes easily if you look back to Jennifer Hudson or Rene Zellweger, what they ate when putting on extra pounds.
If you eat tons of carbohydrates and junk food, pounds (kilos) come easily but get rid of them is the hard work. Basically, when Tom Hanks was in this shape, they shot the parts of the film before the island scenes, and then took a year off to let Tom lose weight to impersonate a real cast away. He didn’t shave or cut his hair for weeks and shed 55lb in four months with a diet and a tough exercise regime.
Let`s see what his diet looked like to reach the desired weight and shape. I know I am not going to surprise you, if I do, you have not read the previous parts. So go back and start reading and you will see the whole picture. If you have been with me since the first part, you will understand why he chose the following list of foods.
Diet and Workout
Here they come: crab, fish, vegetable, very little carbohydrate from fruits, coconut milk, water. When the actor felt hungry, he ate large amounts of vegetables. This allowed him to consume natural food without having to go hungry between meals. This diet later became famously known as the Castaway Diet. To be honest, the main meals actually fit in his palm and it is not too much food and it wears you down after a while.
His celeb weight loss workout regime was pretty simple. 2 hours cardio training six days per week. I personally would find it boring, but if you like this amount of cardio every day, go for it.
Keep in mind what Tom Hanks had been doing for 4-5 months it was because of a role and it will work for you too if you want to lose 55 lbs in 5 months BUT longer than this period it is not recommended.
The reason is:
– you lose lots of muscle tissues and you will look like the marathon runners, but there is one difference between you and hem: THEY EAT PROPER PORTIONS but burn too many calories.
– this is too fast weight loss and the result is not sustainable
– if you go back to eat proper portions and keep the type of food, so you do not go back to your old eating habitm you will put on weight (fat) again because your body, your system were at risk (that`s how your body translate it) and want to be ready for another period like this (whether it comes or not) so it will store energy as fat. Imagine how much weight you could gain if you start eating junk food again.
– if you do not eat supplements such as vitamins and minerals, you will be down and feel anxious within a month because your body will use the last bits of minerals and vitamins it previously restored. After that you are empty and your body will get e.g. calcium from your bones to maintain important body functions, etc.
As you can see, there is no such thing like “magic pill” for weight loss and also there are side effects of the very fast weight loss. Only hard work and strict diet (but not this size of portions) can keep you in shape and make sure it turns into a lifestyle and make sure your weight loss is sustainable and not more than 1-2 lbs (0.5 -1 kg) per week and you will succeed.
