Have you ever thought about going on a liquid diet? Like any diet you’re about to embark on, it’s good to know the advantages and disadvantages so you can decide if it is in fact something you’d want to do.

Unlike other diet programs, you need to be ready for a liquid diet, being aware of your hunger pang times for instance, and how you might feel. Do you like eating and by that I mean, do you get satisfaction out of chewing your food? A liquid diet while in theory might sound good might not actually be right for you.

Here are some facts and ideas to help you make that decision. The good thing about liquid diets is you can assimilate your nutrients easily because it’s a way of getting all your vitamins and minerals in an easily digestible form.

It will help to boost or start a weight loss program as ‘drinking’ your lunch is better than having solid food because liquids will have less calories, so overall on a daily basis you will be consuming less calories. Liquid passes through the system much quicker than solid food too so you will be able to see faster results.

The liquid diet into action

There are several ways you can have a liquid diet. There are commercially made ones, or meal replacements, which typically have 250 calories per drink.  You can find these in sachet form as well with all sorts of flavours and added ingredients, which is the reason I don’t necessarily recommend them.

My preference would be without doubt to make your own.  If you don’t already have a juicer and blender, invest in one of each.  They are awesome. You can juice fruit and vegetables, add yoghurts, honey, and all sorts of other wonderful ingredients making them truly nutritious and delicious which to mind is something very lacking in the commercial ones.  But you appreciate this is my opinion.

The time it actually takes to make your own is minimal, the cost is definitely less and you know exactly what you’re getting as well and they are so much better for you, nutritionally speaking that is.

Something to consider when on a liquid diet, using good fresh ingredients full of vitamins and minerals means you’re guaranteed to be ‘drinking’ healthily. You don’t want to lose weight only to find out the side effects are no energy because you’re missing a vital vitamin or three.

You have to be careful on a liquid diet, so I would suggest one or two days or a week maximum.  Longer than that is really not advisable. Personally I would suggest one day as a ‘trial’.  See how it goes.

You could end up with a headache or feeling tired, and that could be the body getting rid of toxins. Persevere and you’ll soon see the results.  On the other hand, you could end up full of energy and feel great.

Liquid diets of course are a great way to detox, so you’ll be doing your body a lot of good by keeping off solid food for 24 or 36 hours. Remember to maintain variety. In exactly the same way you’d not have the same food for breakfast, lunch and dinner, ring the changes with your drinks as well. Try fruit at one sitting, vegetables at another and possibly a mixture of both for the third.

Remember when you’re making your drinks to have a bit of everything, including protein and fibre.  Use milk, yoghurts, nuts, oats–any of those things will ensure that you’re getting balanced drinks.

Green goddess drink

My favourite juice which I call green goddess. It is absolutely delicious. Has very few calories and is immensely good for you. While my green goddess is delicious and very good for you, one a day is sufficient.

1 cucumber, cup and half of kale, 4 sticks of celery, 2 green apples.

Whiz all together in a juicer add some ginger.

Seasonal summer drink

liquid diet for you

Smoothies and juices are a lovely way to enjoy fruits and vegetables this summer while getting all your nutritional needs met.

1 pear, 1 peeled kiwi, 1/4 ripe avocado, 1 cup frozen raspberries, 1 cup raw spinach, 3 ounces nonfat vanilla Greek yogurt, 1/2 teaspoon flaxmeal, 2 cups cold water.

Blend all ingredients together and enjoy.

Digestive aid drink

1 papaya  peeled, seeded, and cut into chunks, 1/2 cup ice cubes, 1/2 cup nonfat Greek yogurt, 1/2 tablespoon finely chopped peeled fresh ginger,  1/2 tablespoon honey, Juice of 1/2 lemon, Water, to taste, 4 fresh mint leaves, plus 1-2 sprigs for garnish

Refrigerate papaya until very cold, at least one hour or overnight.  Blend papaya, ice, yogurt, ginger, honey, and lemon juice in a blender. Add water, one tablespoon at a time, until mixture is smooth and thinned to desired consistency. Blend in mint leaves.  Garnish with mint sprigs and serve. How delicious does that sound?

Belly fat buster drink

And here’s another smoothie, this one will aid in reducing belly fat!  All you need for this one is

Half cup vanilla nonfat Greek yoghurt, 1 tablespoon almond butter, 50 grams frozen blueberries, 70 grams frozen pineapple, half cup kale, quarter cup water.

Blend all ingredients together until smooth.  Yummy.

There are so many recipes out there for you to try, and all will help you lose weight, but please make sure you don’t do the liquid diet too long. Like I said, a day or two is more than enough.  In fact, you could do a couple of days a week and that would work really well.

As much as anything else, a liquid diet will definitely re-balance your system. It can help get rid of toxins, which is never a bad thing.  A liquid diet can quickly start a weight loss plan. As long as you’re getting all your nutrients, you will lose weight with these recipes.

The most important thing to remember is enjoy whatever you’re doing, eating, and drinking.  Never ever do it because you feel you must, that way is sure to lead to failure. In the end, of course only you can decide whether you want to ingest just liquids for a couple of days or you’d rather to stick to something else.

Whatever you decide, I hope the above has given you some answers.
