Her primary reason for entering was that she wanted her legs to look like those one would see in an anatomy book!

Katie took part in swimming and athletics competitions from the age of 7, eventually progressing to compete in triathlons. However, at the age of 19, she discovered the wonder of weight training and body building, which has since become her enduring primary passion. She entered her first body building show at the age of 21 which she won.

Her primary reason for entering was that she wanted her legs to look like those one would see in an anatomy book! Combining her love for fitness and wellbeing with her natural competitive edge, she entered the fitness industry as a fitness instructor and personal trainer. This led to work in the field of sports therapy.

Katie had been inspired after seeing the results achieved by chiropractors. After years of working with clients, a lot of personal development and travelling around America, Katie decided to follow in the footsteps of her uncle, Terry Chimes (ex Clash drummer) and actually become a chiropractor.

She studied at the A.E.C.C in Bournemouth and after graduation went on to work in North East London. After two years working there, Katie moved to Finland where she honed her chiropractic skills. While she was in Scandinavia she studied many different aspects of health and re-introduced herself to raw food juicing.

After making some health changes, getting back into training more seriously and losinweight as a result, Katie decided to enter a show. Five weeks later she entered Miss Galaxy Universe. She won all four categories she entered and took the Overall Supreme Title. She then went onto compete in the NABBA British Novice finals, which she also won. And it didn’t stop there as Katie went on to more shows and more victories.

Katie in Her Own Words…

Training Methods

“My knowledge as a chiropractor helps with certain exercises, such as knowing and focussing on certain reflexes that take place within the body during certain movements.”

“I like to do a good mixture of cardio and weights. Ideally I like to train twice a day when getting ready for a show. I like to do between 45mins and 1hr’s cardio in the morning and weights in the evening. This is not always possible due to my long working hours however, if I can’t train twice a day, I will do a mixture of cardio, fitness work and weights in one session.

I split my weight training sessions each day so that I can focus on one or two body parts. I like to keep the intensity of my workouts high and I like to add a lot of plyometric (jumping) work in between sets. I also like to incorporate functional training into my workouts. Diet

“I aim to eat 4-5 meals a day. My first meal is always after my first workout. My body responds better to a lower carb diet, however, I now don’t cut my carbs completely (I have learned the hard way). I also aim to get quite a lot of fat in my diet. For protein, I will have a lot of white meat – so I get a lot of my protein from turkey, chicken and fish. I also love salmon, so will eat that twice a week and I also love mackerel.

I do eat red meat about twice a week. Carbohydrates I get from porridge oats, brown rice or sweet potato. Occasionally white potato or peanut butter with a pitta bread. I LOVE vegetables and I am obsessed with spinach, so most of my meals contain spinach. I don’t take many supplements, such as protein shakes, as I don’t like to bulk-up too much, however, I do take vitamins and minerals to help with recovery”

Support

“I have found that it is really important to have a good network of people around you for support. When I was in Finland I didn’t have these people, in particular people who were into competitions, so I felt I did a lot of it on my own. This is why I loved Galaxy (Miss Galaxy Universe) so much and have made some great friends as they are a great source of encouragement to me while I was in Finland and now in the UK.

One person however, who did really help me along the way was my boyfriend of seven years at the time. I will always appreciate him and love him for the support he gave me especially through the hard times. To him I am truly grateful”

Chiropractic Adjustments

Throughout heavy training and competition prep I always make sure I get chiropractic adjustments regularly. In fact I will get at least two a week. This not only helps prevent injury but also keeps the body working optimally.

Chiropractic is not just about getting people out of pain – the nervous system controls every single function in your body so it makes sense to get the spine adjusted on a regular basis. Muscles, organs and all bodily functions work more effectively which is vitally important when your body is put under increased stress.

The hardest part about competing

For my first two shows I cut carbs down so low that I obsessed about sugar in an abnormal way – I would lie in bed at night with my mouth watering at the thought of eating a whole tray of granola and flapjacks!

For me the hardest part about preparing for a show is diet. I’m sure most competitors will say the same thing. One of my true loves, other than family and friends is chocolate – I am obsessed with the stuff! This is one reason why it is important to get a diet that is suitable for you as everyone is different.

For my first two shows I cut carbs down so low that I obsessed about sugar in an abnormal way – I would lie in bed at night with my mouth watering at the thought of eating a whole tray of granola and flapjacks! After I competed in my first competition I binged on sugar. I actually spent £50 on chocolate alone and this was all sitting in the boot of my car!

I flew back to Finland and took a carry case with me full of chocolate. The embarrassing thing was that I got my bag checked at the airport and the security guy could not believe I had a whole case full of chocolate alone! Binging in this way was so unhealthy, in fact I would go as far to say a little dangerous – I had so much water retention and leg swelling.

Also due to flying between the UK and Finland I had cankles for two weeks. My body bit back hard due to all the weeks of carb restriction. This was a big learning curve for me and I have now adjusted my diet so that it suits me better. There was a lot of trial and error.

Since getting back into the fitness industry and competitions….

Katie really enjoys connecting and making lasting friendships with like-minded people who share the same passion and motivation for training. This is a key driving factor for her and why she plans to continue to push herself to work towards more competitions later this year.

Katie is now back in the UK and is committed to combining chiropractic treatment with positive every-day lifestyle choices, for which she is an avid advocate. She endeavours to demonstrate actively that chiropractic care is not just about addressing immediate pain, but is also very much a lifestyle choice.

“After all the nervous system controls everything in the body so when the spine is healthy, the whole body is healthy. I think a lot people underestimate the power of chiropractic care.” As a chiropractor she has met and treated thousands of people from all walks of life.

Some of her highlights include treating babies from just four days old; successfully treating a nine year old who had suffered a stroke; women finally getting pregnant after years of trying and getting patients walking again after being told they never would.

Katie wants to continue to be an inspiration to others, combining her fitness achievements and her chiropractic knowledge to encourage and motivate people to live happily and healthily, improve their lifestyle and to welcome fitness into their lives.

Katie would also love to make contact and work with the best within a big team of health and fitness experts and use her chiropractic knowledge to spread the idea of health. She says, “I have always been drawn to America and I would love to do some sort of work over there. It would also be fun to be sponsored and work as a fitness model
