Is BMI and Body Fat the Same?

We have all heard the term B.M.I. which stands for Body Mass Index, which is a measurement taken based on a person’s weight and height. The formula to work this out is by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres. From there, you divide the answer by your height again to get your B.M.I. A healthy B.M.I. should result between the range of 20 to 25. A B.M.I. above 25 is normally considered overweight or obese and a low B.M.I. below 20 is considered underweight.

Another measurement which we often cringe, even just thinking about it is called Body Fat. One can measure their body fat by using Calipers (which can be hard to target the exact spot used with every measure) or a Body fat testing device, which is a lot easier and more convenient I find. A healthy body fat percentage for females should be between 21% – 35% depending of course on your age. A healthy body fat for males should be between 8% – 24% again depending on age. So, as you can see, we can smile about the fact that females actually require a higher body fat percentage than men due to hormones structures and child bearing.

I would definitely choose my Body Fat to monitor my progress over the Body Mass Index

If our Body Fat is too high, then it can trigger having our visceral fat too high as well. (Visceral Fat is the internal fat around the abdomen that surrounds our organs and bowels, which can lead to heart disease, high cholesterol or high blood pressure). When targeting our goals whether it’s to keep healthy and fit, lose some weight or sign up for a challenge, the Body Fat is always something we have to target to perform and be at our best and healthiest. If we are increasing muscle mass and not losing our Body Fat, then it’s a sign we are doing something wrong, and the Body Fat measurement can show us this, whilst the B.M.I. cannot.

Some people can actually be perfectly fit and healthy and have more than the average size of muscle mass and low body fat, such as weight lifters or body builders, but due to the fact that muscle weighs more than fat, their whole body weight weighs more and thus in the calculations gives them a higher than normal Body Mass Index. So stick to your Body Fat to monitor best results!
