Well what an interesting subject and I know you’re going to find some of the things in this article quite shocking.

Firstly did you know that sugar is like heroin? Yes it is and the reasons for this are quite staggering,

Sugar is actually as addictive as heroin, the only difference between the two is that sugar is legal.

Other facts about sugar you might not have known. When they are made sugar and heroin have similar manufacturing processes.

‘They say’ that heroin is the most addictive drug in the world but when you consider how sugar is added to so many processed foods, not just cakes and biscuits you will soon realize that maybe it is a very close second!

Heroin is processed from the poppy plant then refined into morphine and further refined into heroin.

Sugar starts off as sugar cane is processed into juice then refined into molasses, then into brown sugar and finally into the stuff that lands in your food and on the supermarket shelves in its white packs.

Like heroin, refined white sugar is completely stripped of all its nutrients. Both sugar and heroin create an immediate rush and are incredibly addictive and habit forming.

Sugar damages the organs, including the liver where it goes after being ingested and then it is redistributed over the body as fat.  Sugar damage is much slower than heroin but no less dangerous to your health.

And talking of the damage sugar does to your liver, over loading your liver with fructose, (a byproduct of ingesting sugar), will turn into fat and unfortunately not all of that fat leaves the liver and if it that stays there can turn into non alcoholic fatty liver disease which is becoming a growing problem in many western societies.

There are no nutrients, vitamins or minerals in sugar so it has absolutely no value in your system at all and of course because of the acids it produces when being ingested can be very harmful to teeth and gums.

Sugar can cause insulin resistance. Insulin is a very important hormone in the body. It allows glucose (blood sugar) to enter cells from the bloodstream and tells the cells to start burning glucose instead of fat.

Having too much glucose in the blood is highly toxic and one of the reasons for complications of diabetes, like blindness.

Then of course you get something called insulin resistance which leads to type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease as well as obesity.

One feature of the metabolic dysfunction that is caused by the Western diet, is that insulin stops working as it should. The cells become “resistant” to it.

Insulin also regulates cell growth and when it’s not functioning in the way it should it can cause cancer because this very deadly disease is characterized by uncontrolled growth and multiplication of cells.

So it would appear that having constantly elevated insulin levels caused by too much sugar consumption can contribute to cancer.

Studies have shown therefore that people who consume large quantities of sugar are at a much higher risk of getting cancer due to the harmful facts it has on your metabolism

Drinking large amounts of drinks like sodas which are loaded with sugar and therefore easily ingested into the system causes your blood sugar to rise dramatically and can lead to inflammation.

Soda is often the root cause of gastro-esophageal reflux disease, which is when the contents of the stomach leak into the esophagus causing not only pain but an actual burning of the esophagus from stomach acid.

Sodas also contain artificial colorings and food chemicals like derivative 4-methylimidazole (4-MI); no wonder soda pop has been shown to cause cancer.

So what can you use instead of sugar?

Not artificial sweeteners because they can be as lethal as the white stuff itself (see another similarity to heroin!)

OK, so how about Agave Nectar?

A derivative of the same plant as tequila this golden sweetener tastes similar to honey and is perfect in hot or iced tea. But be sure to use it in moderation as Agave’s high fructose content can sometimes cross it in to the danger zone.

Then there’s Maple Syrup. It comes directly from the plant’s sap and has over 50 antioxidants to keep you healthy.

Manuka honey.is now widely used not just for sweetening that drink but for curing a whole host of ailments as well.

Produced in New Zealand by bees that pollinate the Manuka bush, it is one of the most unique and beneficial forms of honey in the world.

There are many Manuka honey uses that range from healing sore throats and digestive illnesses, to curing Staph infections and gingivitis.

How about trying some raisins for sweetening? If you blend a cup of raisins in a food processer they’re a great way to add sweetness to any baking you might be doing.

Or cinnamon in your coffee, definitely a different taste and so much better for you.

So with some excellent alternatives to sugar and its dire effects on your health perhaps it would be a good idea to cut down your consumption of sugar in its many forms.

Make sure to check labels on foods in supermarkets you’ll be amazed at what they contain.

If you stick to a natural diet as much as possible you can’t go far wrong. All things in moderation I say.

As long as you cut down the sugar intake you’ll be able to live in good health for a very long time and keep your children that way too.
