Back in the day, I would happily forget everything I knew about healthy eating during my holiday – giving myself an excuse to have “time off” but now that I have changed my lifestyle, living and loving healing myself and working towards optimal health, I have shifted the way I approach the holidays and I’ve stopped throwing mindfulness out the window during the holidays.

I now consider my holidays as a powerful opportunity to nourish all aspects of my body.
In terms of food, this means clean eating – if you are going somewhere sunny and hot your holiday is a great opportunity for lovely salads, grilled vegetables and grilled organic meat – we don’t nourish ourselves by abstaining and denying, but by indulging in things that truly nourish us.
If you are going somewhere cold, it is a great opportunity for rich vegetable soups, broths and lovely stews and casseroles and roasted vegetables.
Change your focus for healthy eating on holiday
Instead of thinking about what you shouldn’t eat, I recommend focusing on the amazing foods you can enjoy that are truly nourishing and leave room for a little indulgence.
I am sure you have heard it before but the 80/20 rule, eating clean 80% of the time with 20% for treats works really well on holiday.
Share desserts and treats
Sharing a treat is always a great option, often the portions of desserts or cakes we get are just too much and if you are like I was, I hated leaving food on my plate so I ended up feeling stuffed and instead of feeling energised, felt bloated and tired. But now if I want a treat I share with my husband so we both get a smaller portion, there is no food left over, we don’t feel stuffed so it is a win-win situation.
We also make sure we walk a lot on our holidays so we enjoy the scenery and the food.
Take a trip to local food markets
The great thing about healthy eating on holiday is that food shopping can be part of your holiday experience; you get to try foods that are fresh, local and seasonal, think about exploring the local food markets. You can even get adventurous and try any local foods that you have never eaten before.

However, if you are going on holiday all inclusive you will have everything provided for you and my top tips are:

– Just because it is all you can eat, doesn’t mean you have to eat it all.
What should I try and eat on holiday?

These are all-round nutritional powerhouses.
Kale is high in antioxidants, it helps fight inflammation.
Watercress is one of those greens that everyone should eat – it has more Vitamin C than an orange and more calcium than milk. In Chinese medicine it’s used to improve digestion and fight off bad breath and sore throats, all things you want to avoid on holiday.
Cabbage is full of Vitamin C and antioxidants that fight free radicals.
Broccoli is another food you should include, it has tons of nutrients and helps protect against inflammation and has the benefit of being good cooked or raw.
Carrots are high in antioxidants and always make a great snack.
All in all, there are a variety of foods you can eat to maintain have a healthy holiday, so enjoy the holiday and increase your intake of greens, cruciferous veggies and colourful vegetables.
How to eat healthily on holiday – My top ten tips
Choose the best options you can, grilled meat or fish and vegetables or a variation of these, even if your option is a fast food restaurant you can find the healthiest option on the menu
1. Stock up on water, don’t get dehydrated particularly if you are heading to sunnier climes, and if you are eating out always ask for a jug of water to be brought to the table
2. At a restaurant ask them to hold the bread / rolls / breadsticks etc order olives or a small appetiser instead
3. Fill up on vegetables and protein
4. Just because it is all you can eat, doesn’t mean you have to eat it all
5. Share a main course or order two appetisers with a salad
6. Ask for any sauces, dressings etc to be “on the side”; you then have control of how much you add to your dish
7. Share a dessert with a friend, partner, family member
8. Walk more – enjoy the food and the scenery
9. Enjoy the food markets where you will always be buying local and seasonal
