Why dairy alternatives?

Some experts claim that young adults need to consume more milk. This is because the U.S. National Dairy Council claims that it is the best source of calcium. Health experts beg to differ.

There are endless possibilities when it comes to calcium. In fact, it is more efficient to eat dairy alternatives especially if you feel mucus forming immediately after consuming it. This potential sign could be a warning that dairy does not suit you.

What are good sources of Calcium?

If you are concerned about getting enough calcium try implementing more greens into your diet, such as collard greens. Not only are they loaded with calcium; you will also get the benefit of vitamin K. Vitamin K is necessary for strong bones.

According to Dr. Mercola other sources of calcium include: dry beans (not the kind found in a can – buy them dry and soak for 12-24 hours), sesame seeds and almonds, wild salmon and sardines, rhubarb, and okra.

5 Diary alternatives

Milk

Instead of cow’s milk I drink coconut and/or almond milk. It is important to buy organic almond milk because almonds are normally sprayed with pesticides. I also try to avoid the kind that does not contain carrageenan.

Kara is one of my favorite UK coconut milk companies. Whole Foods Organic 365 offers the most cost effective almond milk.

Yogurt

It is a favorite of mine! You can purchase a non-diary culture online and make your own at home.

Otherwise, I highly recommend coconut yogurt. Co Yo is my favorite UK brand. No added white sugar – xylitol instead. A U.S. brand is Coconut Grove.

Cheese

It’s a hard habit to stop. So don’t. I cave into my goat cheese cravings on occasion. When I am a good girl I eat Daiya cheese. This product can be found in the U.S. and Canada. Amazon UK also carries it.

Either way, if Daiya is not an option you can make your own out of cashews, walnuts, or even almonds.

Another UK company is Veganic, which can be found on www.goodnessdirect.co.uk. The other types of vegan cheese contain soya, which I am particularly not a fan of.

Ice Cream

Who doesn’t love ice cream? I mean seriously, it’s one of the most favored deserts. Why not indulge in it and keep your allergies at bay. By far, my favorite UK company is Booja Booja. It’s rich, indulgent, and soya free.

Another option is to make a quick and easy pudding. Blend almond milk, ½- 1 avocado, 2-3 dates, and almond or sunflower seed butter. Add a pinch of Himalayan salt and/or cinnamon. It’s delish!

Butter

This is a cinch for me because I have found the most delectable butter alternative. Raw coconut butter is one of my favorite food items. I put it on top of my steamed veggies and even in my smoothies. If you don’t enjoy that coconut taste then the UK company, Biona sells an organic spread. A U.S. brand is Melt Organic.

If you do eat dairy – try grass-fed

Many people are switching to grass-fed and raw milk and butter. The reason being is that pasteurization destroys part of the vitamin C and encourages harmful bacteria growth. Plus, some even doubt that pasteurization contains much calcium, if any.

If for some reason you cannot buy grass-fed or raw milk or butter ensure that the cows are not treated with growth hormones, most commonly known as, rBGH or rBST.
