Any diet works in the short term but none of them work in the long term, and if anyone tells you any different, they’re playing with the truth!

Everybody has heard of the word “diet”. It is usually associated with food and usually incorporates eliminating certain food types. (Fat, protein, carbohydrates and alcohol)

In the fitness industry we call these “fad diets”. Any good fitness professional will tell you these diets set you up for failure as it works in the short term but does not work for lasting effect.


What I’m hoping to achieve writing this topic is educating people to avoid a quick weight loss fix but instead aim for a realistic long term fix which will be easy to maintain as nothing drastic has changed with your lifestyle except for a happier and healthier you.

Before we begin lets start with the facts…

What many of you don’t know is that our body burns off energy even if we were lying in bed all day. This is what is known as your basal metabolic rate (BMR). This figure varies from person to person and is determined by your age, sex, weight and height.

When we move or exercise we burn more energy (calories). So it is obvious everyday when we do something physical we are burning extra energy.

Now combine this information with food. If you eat the same amount of energy you burn then you will maintain your current weight. If you eat more than you burn then you will gain weight. If you eat less than you burn you will lose weight. Pretty simple isn’t it?

Intake > Energy burnt = Weight Gain

Intake < Energy burnt = Weight Loss

Intake = Energy burnt = Maintain

Using the above information you can see why people create “diets”. Have you ever thought to yourself “why do I have to eliminate a particular food group?”

I can give you the reason why “diets” choose certain food groups to eliminate. For every gram of each food group there are a certain amount of calories.

1 gram of fat= 9 calories

1 gram of protein= 4 calories

1 gram of carbs= 4 calories

1 gram of alcohol= 7 calories

Using these figures you can straight away see why “diets” say eliminate fat, alcohol or carbs and even in some cases protein.

long term weight loss diet plan_2It does make sense to eliminate a certain group of food but how realistic is it going to be to maintain the “diet” long term?

Anybody that asks me which diet is the best I always say to them “none”. I believe it’s all about making small modifications to your current lifestyle and eating habits because it is more realistic to maintain for the rest of your life.

By eating a well balanced healthy “diet” (I’m using that term loosely) and by exercising or constantly being on the move you will see results over time and also teach yourself good habits.

If you are currently looking into a diet my professional advice is don’t waste your time or money. Start by looking into what you are eating daily. Record it for a week and see where you are going wrong and how you can fix it.

If you can’t do this maybe invest in seeing a professional such as a nutritionist or dietician as they know exactly what to advice you to your specific needs.
