When you think of detox diet drinks, does ‘Lemon Detox’ come to mind? Likely, but detox doesn’t necessarily mean days filled with lemon water!

With Spring is in the air, many people are thinking of losing weight for Summer. With so many options on the market, detox drinks may have come to mind, could they be the solution to a new slim and trim you?

What is Detox?

The term ‘detox’ can mean different things to different people e.g. weight loss, cleansing or fasting. Detox simply means removing harmful or toxic substances from the body. Our bodies are designed to do this naturally. But the theory goes that in this day and age, we are exposed to numerous pollutants, toxins and chemicals and our bodies need a helping hand. While it is important to make long-term permanent healthy changes in our diet and lifestyle, detoxing is thought to help support our natural self-cleansing systems, reducing its load.

Note: Limit detoxing to a few days and no more than 7 consecutive days. A health professional such as a dietitian can help you plan a sustainable healthy weight loss plan. A detox should only be attempted if you are healthy with no medical problems. People with diabetes, kidney problems, irritable bowel syndrome, anemia, who are pregnant or lactating should not detox. Here’s a healthy weekend detox plan, designed by a registered dietician Yvoni Kyriakido.

Detox for Weight loss…?

A detox can help kick-start a weight loss plan. How? A detox plan usually removes processed foods, saturated and trans fats, caffeine, alcohol, excessive amounts of sugar and unnourishing food and beverages. These are often staples in many people’s day-to-day diet. Whether you are pro detox or not, just by cutting these out, weight loss will usually result.

Instead, healthy foods such as fresh fruit and vegetables, wholegrains, beans, nuts and seeds are consumed. These foods provide the nourishment to keep you healthy and meet nutrient requirements. Stripping the diet back to the basics and dropping a few kilos can help you get motivated and ‘re-set the healthy diet clock’ so to speak i.e. initiate a new healthy dietary pattern.

Supplementing a weight loss detox plan with nutrient filled drinks may help support the body’s natural detox systems and help meet nutrient needs by providing a quick and easy source of vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants and fibre.

Tip: be careful not to add too many high calorie ingredients as these can also slow weight loss.
