The truth is, consuming artificial sweeteners is just as bad for you as sugar

In fact, artificial sweeteners can be more harmful to your health.

Sugar has been identified as the cause of a number of negative health problems such as being overweight, type 2 Diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

Many health experts have recommended non-calorie, high intensity sweeteners such as saccharin, aspartame and sucralose and many people switched from regular soft drinks to “diet” versions in an attempt to avoid regular sugar.

Sending mixed messages

There have been many confusing claims over the years but new evidence shows that people who frequently consume these substitutes are at an increased risk of excessive weight gain, Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseass.

This is because artificial sweeteners cause calorie deregulation, it resets your sweetness tolerance, feeds harmful bacteria, and affects serotonin levels which can increase hunger.

Artificial sweeteners can also raise insulin levels in the body which creates fat storage.

When it comes to artificial sweeteners, as few as one “diet” drink per day may be enough to significantly increase the risk for a number of health problems.

So when it comes to sugar – artificial or otherwise in my opinion it is best avoided. If you do need to use anything as a sweetener stick to the most natural forms like raw organic honey.

Obesity

Research has shown that weight gain and obesity is significantly greater in those drinking diet drinks compared with those who don’t.

In countries where the consumption of artificially-sweetened beverages has increased and drinking sugar-sweetened beverages has declined, the rate of obesity has not decreased. It has been on the rise.

dangers of artificial sweeteners_3Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic Syndrome is a cluster of conditions including increased blood pressure, high blood sugar levels, excess fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels.

These symptoms all occur together.

In studies that compared the risk of metabolic syndrome in people who drank either sugar-sweetened or artificially-sweetened beverages, the increased risk was frequently similar for both regular and diet drink consumers.

Type 2 diabetes

In a European study, the risk for developing type 2 diabetes more than doubled for participants consuming diet drinks, compared with non-consumers.

The same can be said for regular sweetened drinks, so the problem is sugar in all its forms, not just artificial sweeteners.

All the findings from the numerous studies show that consuming artificial sweeteners is just as bad for you as sugar and they may even have worse effects on our health than the negative effects of regular sugar.

Changes to your body

Many of the artificial sweeteners are not only toxic to the body but they can interfere with learned responses; the body’s natural ability to adjust to glucose, energy and create internal balance.

People who regularly consume artificial sweeteners show altered activation patterns in the brain’s pleasure center in response to sweet taste.

This suggests that these products will then not satisfy the desire for sweets, so leads to over consumption of sugar laden products.

– Look out for sweeteners in diet drinks, diet foods, yoghurt, sauces and a host of other products, check your labels and avoid products labelled “low calorie,” “sugar free,” “diet” or “no sugar added.”

– Look for things like Aspartame, Saccharin, Neotame, Acesulfame Potassium K and Sucralose. These mimic the flavour of sugar but have no nutritional value and may be toxic.

– Be vigilant and keep these toxic products out of your body and out of your life.
