A Christmas detox?

Who wants to detox at Christmas! Our body is detoxing all the time. When you overdo food/drink high in fat, sugar and alcohol it puts stress on the major detox organs: liver and kidneys.

The lymphatic system is also a sygnificant detox organ which carries fat around the body and when overloaded weakens the immune system increasing colds/coughs over the festive break.

RELATED: RECOMMENDED PLANS FOR YOU

So here are my suggestions on how you can enjoy Christmas and keep your detox organs in harmony so you stay energised and healthy for the New Year.

1. Stay hydrated

Drink a minimum of 1.5 to 2 litres of water/herbal teas daily.

Swap some of your regular teas for Redbush tea which is rich in antioxidants. If you are a coffee drinker swap two coffees for dandelion coffee .

Start your day with lemon juice which stimulates digestion and the liver rich in vitamin C while the acid helps stimulate stomach acid to digest food particularly high protein foods such as meat and helps absorb nutrients.

Make your last drink of the day 1 hour before bed warm water and lemon juice. The work of the liver increases overnight peaking at 3am.

2. Stock up on fruit in season – apples, pears and pineapple

Apples are a good source of soluble fibre to remove excess cholesterol and are also settling for the stomach.

New research indicates pear juice contains enzymes to process alcohol .

Pineapple contains a digestive enzyme called bromelain to help reduce bloating.

3. Have a minimum of 2 portions of greens daily

Greens such as kale, spinach, watercress and broccoli in a smoothie, salad or stir fries.

Try sliced brussel sprouts stir fried with sweet chestnuts, pomegranates and chopped bacon.

Make a big pot to last 3 or 4 days, particularly root vegetables: butternut squash or sweet potato which are very settling for the stomach! So a cupful may be just the job for Christmas Day Supper! Add cinnamon and ginger for a warming effect.

5. Don’t miss out on desserts/cakes.. just make healthier versions!

Gluten free cakes made with almonds which are a power house of nutrients to replace flour. Replace butter with coconut oil which is antimicrobial and contains medium fatty acids which bypass the liver as it is absorbed straight into the body for a source of energy.

Try my chocolate brownies made with chickpeas

– 240g chickpeas
– 5 dsp of organic green and blacks drinking chocolate powder
– 1 tbsp of cocoa
– 50g of melted raw coconut oil
– 2 eggs.
– 1 cup of almond milk

christmas detox_4How to: Blitz milk, coconut oil and eggs. Then add chickpeas and chocolate powder until you get a smooth thick batter. This will make 6 portions which can be cooked in a muffin tin or silicon muffin holder for 15 to 20 minutes at 16oC

Strawberry and soya cream frozen dessert

Blitz strawberries with soya cream and apple juice to sweeten. Pour into moulds and freeze to use instead of regular ice cream .

Baked fruit salad

Chop up apples, oranges, plums and banana and add to a tray with melted coconut oil. Drizzle ginger syrup and sprinkle pieces of stem ginger before baking in oven at 200C for 30 minutes. Stir half way through.

Sprinkle ground almonds over before serving with a spoonful of Greek yoghurt

So you can enjoy Christmas and keep your detox organs happy too!
