It wasn’t so many years ago that Chai was a bit of a mystery to most people, in fact it was probably entirely unknown to most. However, with the growth of coffee shops worldwide and the prevalence of chai on the menu, it has definitely grown in familiarity.

But what do you really know about it?

Celeb chef and world renown paleo diet guru Pete Evans and his paleo way team are exclusively providing WatchFit with a weekly recipe for you to learn and use.

And this week Pete is shedding a bit more light on Chai with his super tasty and nutritious paleo chai smoothie.

What’s so healthy about chai? Lets take a look…

The ingredients below are a great clue to the benefits to be found.

Cinnamon – One of the healthiest spices you can find and used medicinally for thousands of years. Amongst a huge number of benefits, it is full of antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, hart disease battling properties as well as aiding insulin resistance.
Cardamom – Cholesterol control, cancer battling, gastrointestinal protection and supporting blood circulation. It is also believed to have aphrodisiac properties!

Cloves –  Small maybe, but big in benefits! Great anti-inflammatory properties, battles upper respiratory infections, improves digestion, useful for treating cuts and bruises and even thought to be great for relieving toothache.

Ginger – A well known and proven healthy food. Gastrointestinal relief, anti-inflammatory, protection against colorectal cancer, induces cell death and ovarian cancer cells, immune boosting and believed to relieve nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.

Licorice – You might be more likely to think of it in a bag of sweets, but the real thing is very good for you. Great for treating various forms of nausea, muscle pain and soreness, anti-inflammatory and useful in the battle against osteoarthritis.  It also helps treat indigestion, menstrual pain and improves brain function.

This is only a brief overview of the benefits of some of the ingredients, but it is enough to illustrate that the components of Pete’s Paleo Way Chai Smoothie are seriously good for you!

Chai Paleo Smoothie

Yield: 600 ml   Serves: 2

Preparation time: 5 minutes

Cooking time: 0

Difficulty: easy

Course: drink

Allergens: n/a

– 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
– ½ teaspoon ground cardamom
– ½ teaspoon ground cloves
– 1 teaspoon fresh finely grated ginger
– 1 teaspoon licorice root powder (optional)
– 1 fresh organic free-range eggs (raw)
– 10 macadamias, soaked in filtered water for 4 hours to soften
– 250 ml coconut water
– 250 ml coconut cream or coconut milk

Place all the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Pour into a glass, dust with an extra pinch of cinnamon and serve immediately.

Thermomix version:

Chop bananas into 2cm pieces, place all ingredients in bowl and blend 1 min/speed 9.
