Image is everything in the showbiz world, fit, toned, glossy hair and glowing skin are paramount. It seems that every celebrity has a diet and fitness secret that keeps them looking fabulous for photo shoots and trips along the red carpet. Is it possible for those of us in the non-celeb world to look so good without crash diets, insane fitness regimes and the employment of personal chefs and nutritionists?
There are some crazy diets out there……think Beyonce and the notorious Maple Syrup Diet. A two week crash diet with just a daily 300 calorie intake consisting of maple syrup, lemon juice, water and cayenne pepper, there is no surprise that followers lose weight in the short term. But a starvation diet completely devoid of protein, iron, calcium, zinc and vitamin C as well as calories to get you through the day is high on the list of ‘worst celebratory diets’.

Cameron Diaz – The ‘No White Plan’
Cameron says that until her 30s she lived on junk food, and although slim, she felt lethargic, depressed and had bad skin. A lifestyle change during the filming of Charlie’s Angels saw her embracing a healthy diet and fitness regime to help her not only look amazing, but feel it too. She shares her secrets in the recently published ‘The Body Book‘ in which she extols the benefits of cutting out processed white foods such as bread, pasta, rice, pasta, cakes, biscuits etc. in favour of vegetables, fruit, lean protein and whole grains. By cutting the processed stuff, calorie, salt, sugar and unhealthy fats are reduced and replaced with wholesome nutrient packed ‘superfoods’. It’s not revolutionary, but it works and she has the figure to show for it. Not only does she look wonderful, Cameron reports that nourishing her body also has tremendous benefits for her psychological health.
What’s on Cameron’s menu? Yogurt, almonds, chicken, big salads of colourful veg, fruit, omelettes, spinach, tomatoes, dark chocolate are among the list of fabulous nutritionally dense foods making a regular appearance on Cameron’s plate. A no nonsense daily exercise routine of running, elliptical training, weights and Pilates not only keeps her strong and lean, but happy too!
Jessica Alba and Halle Berry – The 3-2-1 Diet
Followed by Jessica and Halle to lose weight after their pregnancies, the 3-2-1 diet consists of 3 meals, 2 snacks and 1 litre of water. The diet promotes ‘lean and clean’ eating with plenty of low fat protein, wholegrain low GI carbohydrates, fruit and vegetables. By eating regular meals and snacks hunger is kept at bay so cravings for junk food are less likely. Low glycaemic index foods such as brown rice, jumbo oats, beans, yogurt, lentils and nuts help to keep you full up for longer as well as keeping blood sugar levels steady. Chicken, fish and nuts provide protein, the building blocks for muscles. Protein also helps you to feel full up, while fruit and veg are powerhouses of antioxidants, phytochemicals and vitamins. Combine these foods at each meal, such as a high protein plain yogurt e.g. Total yogurt with berries for breakfast, a big bowl of lentil & tomato soup at lunch, and grilled salmon with a plate full of roasted veggies for dinner. Great snacks include nuts or seeds, yogurt, oatcakes with peanut butter, a seriously healthy flapjack or simply a piece of fruit!
The Red Carpet Diet
Before hitting the red carpet, Fergie and Denise Richards are rumoured to follow a belly blasting diet for just a few days to ensure they can zip up their dress and feel at ease when the papps are out. Although it appears like the ultimate fad diet, cutting out gas producing food has firm scientific backing. The dietary principle of excluding ‘high FODMAP food’ is used by dietitians and gastroenterologists for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome, where wind and bloating is one of the main symptoms. Excluding high FODMAP foods significantly reduces gas production, so that bloating is reduced, resulting in a more svelte midriff. Wheat, dairy, beans, lentils, apples, pears, broccoli, onions, garlic, and artificial sweeteners are all on the avoidance list for the days coming up to a big event.
