Many of us don’t know our blood type; nonetheless know how to eat based upon that type. But yes, there is such a diet plan and it has been around for quite some time.

Pioneered by naturopath Peter J. D’Adamo, he wrote several books on the topic suggesting that your blood type reflects a certain eating style for optimal health.

The plan suggests that based upon your blood type of O, A, B, or AB (and race), this will predict tolerance for various foods and suggest the types of food you should eat for optimal health.

It is common knowledge that there are the four blood types of O, A, B or AB. In the Blood type diet, the blood types are classified loosely on evolution. Based on these types a diet plan of foods that would work best for your type is suggested; and eating this way will improve health.

Type O is the oldest blood type and can almost be dubbed “caveman-esque”. Individuals of this blood type are advised to consume heavy intake of lean meats, fish, poultry, vegetables and low grain, bean and dairy intake.

Type A is considered “agrarian” and individuals of this type should consume a vegetarian diet.

Type B is considered “nomadic”, suggesting type B’s avoid corn, wheat, lentils, buckwheat, peanuts, tomatoes, beans and lentils and whole grains.

Type AB is the youngest blood type and considered modern, here the focus is on seafood, dairy, vegetables and tofu.

So what does this all mean? I’m a happy, healthy vegetarian with Type O blood!  Well, it really doesn’t mean much, other than another eating style that you may choose for yourself.

Currently, there is little evidence to support the claims that eating according to one’s blood type will impact health as suggested by the blood type diet.

Food and nutrition is an important part to one’s health, and certainly changes in your diet can impact your health for the better.

However, I believe despite your blood type, everyone is different and what impacts one person with type O blood may not have the same effect on another type O person.

There are too many factors within one’s body that can affect one’s health.

With that said, among other eating plans out there the Blood Type diet can be good for you, if that is the eating style that works best for you.

The plan overall highlights eating more whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and less processed foods for just about every blood type.

Cutting out refined sugars, flours, fast foods, sugary drinks and heavily processed foods will naturally have a positive effect on the body.

If you are looking to change your eating style and try the blood type diet specific to your blood type and you are able to commit to that eating plan, lose weight, feel better then that’s great!

You’ve made changes for the better and found a new eating lifestyle.  If however you don’t then perhaps it’s not for you.

Whatever your blood type or health goals are when it comes to your diet, the most important principle is settling on a balanced eating style that works for you and your body.
