Bloating must be the number 1 reason why people come to see me. Bloating can be really uncomfortable and symptomatic of a variety of things. Do not ignore the symptoms. And if the information in this article does not help, do see your GP!

Let’s look at some common causes and associated tips to help alleviate the problem:

1 – Eating food on the go and not allowing it to digest properly.

With lifestyles being so hectic and busy for people these days, many do not actually give themselves time to sit down and eat their food without rushing. This can constantly put your body into  fight or flight stress, which actually switches off your digestive stomach acid and enzymes.

So always find a place to sit down and eat. And ensure you allocate enough time to do so at a more relaxed pace. Not only is this good for you, but it will also make for a far more pleasureable eating experience!

2 – Lack of water can make you feel bloated, so keep a bottle of water in your bag or at your desk and sip it slowly throughout the day.

3 – Having a drink with your meal may feel as natural as using cutlery. However drinking with your meals can actually make it  difficult for your food to be digested. So drink half an hour before and after a meal.

However, if you really do prefer to have some liquid along with your meal, I suggest half a cup of warm water with 1 dsp of lemon juice which is actually very helpful with digestion.

4 – Eating too much sugar. Sugar is being increasingly exposed as a devastatingly bad element of so many diets. It feeds the bad bacteria in the gut and without protein gets absorbed more quickly.

5 – Eating fruit after a meal. Protein takes 3 to 4 hours to digest in the stomach, whereas fruit can take as little as 20 minutes. So eat fruit as a starter or a snack.

6 – A meal high in salt such as a takeaway or a processed meal. Salt retains water so it is self evident that too much salt will increase bloating. Ditch the processed foods and eat more fresh vegetables, fresh meat and fish.

7 – Intolerance to foods, such as onions or eggs which are high in sulphur and are therefore hard to digest if the balance of bacteria in your digestive system is out of balance and containing too much bad bacteria. Avoid for 2 weeks and take a probiotic capsule to put good bacteria back into your system.

8 – Ageing (40 plus) depletes stomach acid which is essential to initiate digestion of protein foods such as meat and fish and will slow down digestion of fatty foods too. So start your day with a cup of warm water and 1 dsp of  “Mother” cider vinegar (Biona Range) and again before dinner to stimulate your own stomach acid.

This is essential to release minerals from your food such as B12 and zinc for good digestion/absorption keeping your mind and body healthy. We can’t do anything about the march of time and the ageing process, but we can certainly help the optimum functioning of our body regardless of age.
