Did you know that the acid/alkaline balance of your blood and extracellular fluid is an important aspect to health? Did you know that your body does an amazing job at regulating the acid/alkaline balance of your blood and extracellular fluid? An acid and alkaline diet cannot change your blood and extracellular pH but it can change the pH of your urine.

So what is an acid and alkaline diet and why does it matter? Let’s take a look- An acid and alkaline diet is all about consuming foods that are acid-forming and alkaline-promoting. When the food  you eat is metabolised, some produce acids as a by-product (acid-forming) and some the by-product is alkaline (alkaline promoting).

As part of the acid and alkaline diet, acid-producing foods include grains (wheat, rice, oats, rye, barley, bread, cereal), fish, meat, legumes, diary & eggs while alkaline-promoting foods include fruits (especially citrus, dates and raisins) vegetables (raw, slightly steamed).

Your body cannot handle a high acid load. It can create an environment for unhealthy organisms to flourish, affect the functioning of  tissues and organs and compromise your immune system.

So why does an acid and alkaline diet matter?

An acid and alkaline diet supports the consumption of vegetables, fruits, real food while limiting processed junk foods. It is based on real unprocessed food which is essential for optimum health. Acids including amino acids, fatty acids and your DNA are in fact some of the most important building blocks of life so you do need some acid forming foods in your diet .

It is possible for you to become  too alkaline or too acidic which are both unhealthy. A healthy balance is crucial for optimum health. It is important to be taking in enough alkaline promoting foods rather than taking in too much acid-forming foods.

Reducing the consumption of grains and diary which are acid-forming and increasing the consumption of vegetables (raw, slightly steamed) and fruits which are alkaline-promoting can have significant health benefits.

So in conclusion, as part of the acid and alkaline diet, it is important to be taking in enough alkaline promoting foods such as your vegetables (especially the green leafy vegetables) rather than taking in too much acid-forming foods.
