Weight being such a universal worry, no wonder most of us are ready to try any effective diet we hear in an attempt to achieve our goals. However, with large amounts of conflicting information, how does one tell which plan is right for them?

A ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach doesn’t work when it comes to dieting, according to research. Whichever diet you decide to embrace, you will find There is no magic bullet. Results vary widely, even among very similar people on the same diet.  Let’s discern which plan might work best for your personality type!

(1) Detox Diet

It is best for people who indulge, but also take care of their health. You go through phases of overeating (Christmas or at work), but between these times you have breaks where you really focus on your health.

You may suffer from bloating, but the high fibre in a detox diet might help boost a sluggish digestive system. Detox diets vary, but most are very low calorie and involve eating mainly fruit and vegetables, while avoiding caffeine and alcohol and eliminating potential dietary allergens including wheat, dairy, sugar and red meat. The phases last from two-days to a week.

Detox diets claim to flush toxins from your body, purge excess fat, improve digestion, clear your complexion and give you energy. Whilst there’s not enough evidence that they work, the body is at most times capable of clearing out harmful substances. If you feel the need to detox, here are some foods to avoid:

– Alcohol

– Caffeine

– Excessive sugar

– Unhealthy fats (butter, fried foods, saturated fat, fatty meats)

– Processed foods (things that come out of boxes or have chemicals)

– Artificial sweeteners

– Excessive protein (which is hard on the digestive system)

(2) The sweet tooth- serial snacker

Combine a sweet tooth dieter with a serial snacker, and you’ve got double trouble. Your ideal diet plan. You need to plan your indulgences carefully! Don’t waste calories on whatever’s lying around your home or office! Identify the treats you love the most and plan how much you’re going to enjoy. Savor them bite by bite. Eat a few high-quality sweets, and soon goodies you used to call delicious will be a calorie-laden thing of the past.

Add plenty of fresh fruit into your diet plan. Peaches, strawberries, and bananas can ease your sweet tooth while providing you with fiber and key nutrients. You can try dipping fruit in low-fat yogurt.

Prepare your snacks and meals mindfully,. Think mini-meals, such as half a sandwich and veggies and avoid snack foods like chips and cookies. It’s too easy to down the entire bag while you’re distracted.

 Best for: Meat-lovers who care where their food comes from The ‘hunter-gatherer’ diet our ancestors would have enjoyed: plenty of fish, meat, eggs, vegetables, fruit, seeds, nuts and herbs, but no processed grains, dairy or sugar.

Proponents of the Paleo diet say it switches your body from a carb-burning machine to a fat burning machine. They argue this is beneficial because your body’s preferred source of energy is fats – not the high amount of carbs in the modern diet – as it’s a much slower burning fuel and more efficient.

It may seem like a sensible diet, particularly when removing sugar and salt, but bear in mind it does cut out several food groups including dairy and grains, which provide essential nutrients, such as calcium, vitamin D, magnesium, B vitamins and fibre.

If anyone is going to try any of the plans listed, it should be approved by a doctor first, especially if taking a medication or has a medical condition.

(5) Master Cleanse: The Lemonade Diet, The Maple Syrup Diet

This diet promises to cleanse the body of toxins and obliterate cravings for junk food, alcohol, and tobacco. For 10 days you’ll drink 6 to 10 glasses of “lemonade” (water, lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper) a day. You’ll also drink a glass of salt water in the morning and a laxative tea at night.

Who’s tried it: Singer Beyonce Knowles, actor Jared Leto.

This can be dangerous, due to the low-calorie intake and lack of research. It could be stressful on your GI tract because you don’t eat any solid food for 10 days.

(6) Liver Cleansing Diet

It promises to improve liver function, which will help a variety of ailments, including bloating, digestion, fatigue, moodiness, IBS, high cholesterol, allergies, headaches, and sugar cravings.

How it works: The 8-week program advises you to eat lots of raw fruits and vegetables (no cooking), and some proteins (grains, raw nuts, seeds, legumes, eggs, skinless chicken, lean red meat, fish). Avoid all dairy products, fried foods, processed foods, excessive alcohol, and refined sugars. Drink at least 2 liters of water, raw juice, or tea every day. Eat organic foods if you can. Take daily liver tonic capsules.

Though the eating plan on its own could be healthy, if the follower is vigilant about calcium intake, the addition of liver cleansing pills is a red flag.  Following this diet without medical consultation could be harmful in that the herbs found within the pills could interfere with medication or trigger an allergic reaction.

(7) The 3-Day Fruit Flush Diet

What it promises: A 10-pound weight-loss in 3 days.

How it works: On Day 1, drink protein shakes. On Day 2 and 3, you’ll eat fresh fruits every two hours (no frozen, dried, or canned fruits allowed) and a dinner of raw, nonstarchy veggies and a bit of lean protein. Avoid cooked vegetables, caffeine, alcohol, most fats, sugars, and all beverages except filtered water.

Do not exercise during the three days, although light walking for 20 minutes is okay.

You will lose weight on this diet because of the low-calorie food intake, but it’ll mostly be water weight. Over an extended period of time, you may miss out on nutrients. The lack of fat in this diet will affect the absorption of the fat soluble vitamins A, D, E and K.”

(8) Dr. Joshi’s Holistic Detox

This diet promises to return your body to its natural alkaline balance by altering the pH of your system with food. The diet will improve your metabolism and break your cravings for toxins like caffeine, sugar, and salt.

During this 21-day detox, you’ll eat white meat, brown rice, dark green vegetables, certain fish, gluten-free breads, and soy products. Avoid acidic foods like red meat, most dairy, fruit (except bananas), wheat, yeast, alcohol, sugars, coffee or tea, or artificial foods or flavorings. Drink lots of water.

Try it, but proceed with caution. For the most part, “this is a healthy diet” but make sure to consume adequate amounts of vitamin C, since the diet bans most fruits. It’s also important to eat the right dark, leafy green vegetables( spinach, broccoli, kale and asparagus), to get enough calcium, given the ban on dairy.

(9) Gwyneth Paltrow’s Latest Detox Diet

A sample day’s menu includes a glass of lemon water and herbal tea in the morning, a blueberry and almond smoothie for breakfast, coconut water, a salad with carrot and ginger dressing for lunch, a handful of mixed pumpkin and sunflower seeds for a snack, and broccoli soup for dinner.

Followers of the diet are encouraged to do deep breathing or gentle yoga, ingest a few spoonfuls of extra virgin olive oil at night, take a mild herbal laxative if constipation occurs, and eat whole organic foods.

Can’t handle the maple syrup-lemon water-Cayenne pepper liquid diet? Can’t afford organic fruits and vegetables for every meal? Most mainstream cleanse diets are unrealistic. However, eating a properly balanced diet is a detoxification of the body.

The most effective ‘detox’ is drinking plenty of water, getting enough sleep, and eating a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats so that our own detox organs can keep us healthy.
